Have you ever bleached a stock then stained it. I have a very dark almost utility grade walnut stock.
Was wondering if bleaching it and then staining it would work.

I have several times, to stocks with black water mark stains. I have since read that regular bleach may somehow degrade the wood and that there are better products for the job, so do some research. It worked perfectly for me but the black stains due take some time to get out.

For removing black stains, oxalic acid works well. One method is to mix Barkeepers Friend with water to form a thin paste and paint it on the stock. Let it dry on the wood, repeat as needed.

Don’t know if it would do much for the natural color of a stock. For darkening walnut, Alkanet root oil is about the only thing that I use.

Daly's Wood Bleach is your friend if you just have to do it. It is 7% sodium hydroxide in Part A and 30% hydrogen peroxide in Part B. It will weaken the wood, but used sparingly you will probably not notice. The 2 parts develop considerable synergy and it is faster than any other commercial bleach.
