Interesting comment about the strength of the 93 and 95 Mauser rifles on Wikipedia.

"The SAAMI maximum average pressure (MAP) for this cartridge is 51,000 psi (351.63 MPa) piezo pressure or 46,000 CUP.[8][9] This lower specification is in deference to the Remington Rolling block rifles that may still be in circulation. Concerns regarding the early Mauser rifles such as the models 93 and 95 are misplaced,[9] as the original ammunition issued with the M93 Spanish Mauser produced an average pressure of 50,370 CUP in those rifles.[10"

So... 53.5 gns of H414 under a 120 gn NBT on a hot July day is a tad much for a Rem Rolling Block?... (grin)

A machinist friend of mine, against my advice, converted 2 1895 DWM's to .308 for his grandsons...the grandsons have been shooting the hell out of them for 25 years, and loading them to the full 62,000 psi I think. So just how good was my advice?

Well this is a fine pickle we're in, should'a listened to Joe McCarthy and George Orwell I guess.

According to an article in the American Rifleman, a large quantity of Remington rolling blocks sold as being chambered to the 7x57 Mauser actually have chambers that were way out of spec. I came across that bit of information when reading through a collection of Rifleman magazines dating from 1936 through the present date It's not that the action is bad, it's due to bad chambers. I'm sorry but I just do not remember the details It just may have been improper head spacing but I can't say for sure. IIRC, Ken Waters mentioned the rolling blocks being singled out in his first article on the 7x57 but stated that he didn't remember exactly when he saw it. I copied it and sent it to him but didn't keep a copy for later reference. My bad.
