I picked this up at a small local show yesterday. A Savage 99 K Model in 30-30. The gun looks all original to me. I don't see a lot about these online. This one dates to 1928. How many of these were built. and in what time period.

Consider yourself very lucky.

Beautiful rifle.

Congratulations on being smart enough to have bought a nice Model K and welcome to the Forum!

I think it might be a 1929 production. Tang sight has been replace but that is minor.

After Savage stopped selling Special Order rifles, they offers the Model K which was their cataloged top of the line 99. Production was around 1927-1939.

We have two authors on this forum that have written books on the subject. You might want to grab up one or two and learn the history behind your new rifle.

Rick, I’m curious. Why do you think the tang sight has been replaced? Couldn’t that be the original sight that was bent upward for some reason?

nice 99K, rare in 30-30. The earliest ones date to early 1927. A few of the earliest ones appear to be engraved by Enoch Tue who went to work for Savage in 1899 and apparently engraved some of the early 99K's before passing away. Your rifle is Gough engraving. He engraved the K's until the end of production.
I cover the K in a great deal of detail in my book on "Engraved and Special Feature Savage 1895's, 1899's and 99's." You can get an inscribed and signed copy from me. My info is at the bottom of my post. Feel free to call me at 307-231-0869. I'm always glad to talk to Savage collectors.

Thanks for the correction, Jaaack. For some reason (old age?) I was thinking that the K's shipped with a Lyman 29 1/2... but they didn't. Lyman 1A is correct, bent or not.

Rick, maybe you were thinking of how they should have been shipped. (When I bought mine it had a Redfield 70 on it. I replaced it with a Lyman 30 1/2.)

Now that you have the fever you need one or both of these. You won't stop with one.

I have to say this again.

I think this is a beautiful rifle. This rifle was made at a time when I think Savage was at their absolute best. Also, the rifle is chambered in 30–30 which is a favorite of mine. I think there’s enough patina on this rifle to make it still usable on a hunting trip or two. This particular rifle really calls to me, and you’re a very lucky man to get it.

If you ever decide to sell, please look me up.

99Ks have always eluded me.

I have few more to post when I get some pictures. One of them I think you'll like as much as this one. First I have to remember where they are. The books are a must have and I will order them within the week. I buy everything locally so finding nice ones is a bit of a hunt. Is there any kind of idea of how many K Models were built?

Mikebiker,

Some guys here will have some information to provide you on the amount of 99K. I do know there weren’t many.

You started right at the top! 99Ks are difficult to find. Collectors snatch them up. The good news is now you can pursue a few other models.

Welcome to the forum!

Would also like to hear if the 1a sight base is correct or bent? I bought a 03 Springfield equipped with a 1a using the Lyman modified 03 striker mount. The detent point.is slightly adj.to.keep the staff vertical so I wondered if the base was bent up or the plumbness was incorrectly adjusted.. mb
