I want to buy an AR in 22LR for my wife to practice on. What is a good reliable make & model that functions on most brands of ammo? I've been to the range many times and have seen guys having jams / ejection issues & trying to avoid that.

I had an m&p 15-22 and it was plenty reliable. it just wasn't accurate enough for me I would call the best it was was three MOA probably closer to 4.

I'm interested here other people's experience of this also.

s&W 15 .22 got one for the gf as her first powder burner and she loves it. Gave it a lil paint job to match her hello kitty obsession too
Does need a few lil tweaks though
And it will really test you fundamentals when it comes to shooting groups.
Replaced the trigger springs so it's a nice 3lbs , was closer to 6. The stick is....mwah but made sure to get some rings that are about the perfect height so when I get on it I just open my eyes and it's all clear, no head movement or anything and super comfortable. I've tried a few and CCI standard target is what I liked the most
CCI being the top targets federal auto match being the bottom

Did need to give it a new scope a few months back

O and I highly recommend getting the smaller 10rd mag for it . Much easier to shoot with off a bench

I’m pretty partial to my Nordic upper in terms of reliability.

It eats almost everything. Shoots about 1” groups ten shot at 50 with cci standard or blazer.

I put alot alot alot of rounds through it. Multiple cases of cci blazer

Another vote for the 15-22 . I've had one for years with a Romeo 5 on it. Reliable, plenty accurate enough for the intended purpose. Breaks down for cleaning like any AR. Usually 2k rounds or so or when it gets failures to feed. Likes federal automatch bulk ammo.

Keep in mind that 3 MOA translates into about an inch and a half at 50 yards and 3/4” at 25 yards. That’s fairly typical performance from the best field grade .22s of our youth. Today, we turn up our noses at such performance. But, I recall the other kids and me killing an awful lot of California Ground Squirrels during the ‘50s.

Been using the S&W 15-22 for 15 yrs or so now....Camo pattern also

No issues......only keeping the mags full of Aguila or CCI Mini's

Have a Truglo red/green dot on it

You may want to consider some 10 rd mags for over the hood shooting too

I like my M&P 15-22. I have a Sig Romeo 5 on top and enjoy the heck out of the rig. My particular gun was a jammer when I first got it. A tweak of the ejector and now it runs like a sewing machine. With the 2 MOA red dot I can hold about a 1" - 1.25" group at 50 yards with Mini Mags. I think it is as accurate as a run-of-the-mill 10/22 carbine. And as reliable as a 10/22 once I adjusted the ejector slightly.

I see lot's of S&W M&P 15-22's in steel matches and they seem to be very reliable. But there are lots of other options. The Nordic uppers are good and if you want to go cheap, the CMMG conversion kits seem to work pretty well.

I bought a Compass Lake 22LR upper today. Probably one of their last ones. It fits a standard lower.

They are supposed to be very accurate. Sub MOA at 50 yards.

Expensive but I bought it for practicing for high power.

I can't recall what we invested in a krieger barreled upper years ago. Was not cheap. And was not super accurate without match ammo. But with match ammo it was a ragged hole for 10 shots at 50 yards if I could keep my eyes and irons and the sling right...

That said for plinking. The first Bear creek upper I got had ejection issues and would not hold its extractor in. They wanted to replace immediately.. I said just send me a few parts.... they were right, it was a lemon. Replaced it and its never missed a beat.

How accurate? No real clue because I just play with it. I've shot it with 2 kinds of cheap ammo and it will hold a nickel or so at 25 yards basically. Which is plenty for us.

The 416…made by umarex like so many of the others

I bought one after watching a father/son just absolutely hammer on one at the range and never an issue

The trigger isn’t great but mine has been shot to filthy and back, and has never given me one bit of trouble

I have a Tippman Arms M4-22 Elite with a SIG Romeo 5 on top of it for the last 3 years or so and it has been great.

No issues and it cycles everything I have tried to feed it (both STD. and High velocity).

I recently put one together. Arms Unlimited had a good deal on one of those CMMG conversion kits. I picked up a lower and an upper from PSA at great prices. Added A SIG red dot sight, and I'm in business. Actually quite accurate and so far, very reliable. Mine is picky though, and likes CCI mini mags best. Total cost was around $500 for everything.

I really like the Tippmans because they operate the same as a real AR and are very reliable.
