I went fishing after work for 3.5 hours. I caught this nice rainbow on the first cast. Then nothing, not even a sniff. I guess if I'm only going to catch one fish, then this is the one to catch. Nice fish. Looks like a spring spawner given the color.
A church going fishing buddy has frequently wished God would tell one when to cease fishing. I.e. "You're done, as there will be no more for the remainder of the day." Such would let us quit and take on other more productive endeavors for the balance of our time.
He's also said the state should recognize and reward sincere effort. That is: If we fish hard all day with no gain, the state should let us visit the hatchery where we can pick a nice steelhead from the new arrival tank.
Being a fly fisher, I often have experiences similar to yours. It's a slow-going day, so I switch to a different pattern and BANG, fish on. Thoughts are I've finally got it figured out now, and action will subsequently pick up. That event is then followed with hours of unproductive casting practice.
Most of our water is still dry matter around here. Need some warmer weather.

I can relate. I fly fish as well, but also spin cast jigs and other lures. Drives me crazy when I throw about everything I can think of and still come up with nothing.

Another occasional issue is being out with a buddy, standing side by side, using identical gear and terminal tackle, he's killing them, and I can't buy a fish. Switch rods, still can't get a bump, and again he's still into fish.
