We visited the USS Constitution a few years back. Pretty amazing. It's a pity you have to go to Boston to see it.

A few miles from my home is Crane Naval Surface Warfare Center or NAVSEA as I believe they call it now. Anyway, it is a huge facility covering 64 square miles being built just prior to World War II. There is thousands of acres of timber and there is a particular tract called Constitution Grove. Over the years, any wood needed for repair of old Ironsides come from this particular stand of oak which covers a large area. A friend of mine is a forester there and is responsible for this stand of timber.

But, it's a really nice visit when you do. Was up there doing some Uni work in the 80s and was told that they take it out for a run every summer and then dock it in the opposite direction. Never got to see that.
I remember going to Boston a few years after I got out of the Navy. I was struck by how absolutely small that ship is. I was on 3 different ships. A Frigate, USS Pharris FF1094, USS Kalamazoo AOR-6, and the USS John F Kennedy CV-67. Was on temporary duty on the Kennedy after I made E-5 so I didn't get to know her like the back of my hand but... Damn Old Ironsides was small compared to what I was used to...

It's 200' long with a full crew compliment of about 500 men. I imagine it got a bit crowded when the cannonballs started flying. For comparison, the Mayflower was almost exactly 1/2 the length. That voyage had 102 passengers and 30 crew.
