HawkI:you and I appreciate the same type music! I wonder how many others recognize those lines? Great song/ lines and life lesson by a great songwriter. Covid got John Prine, one of my favorite songwriters.

It's handy for laying out joist spacing and it'll hit 8' centers but if you don't know what it's for, you probably don't need to know..

Yes, very common in commercial stick built housing when using floor trusses with sound channel.

It's a cost cutting thing. They can put 5 joists in an 8' space instead of 6. Floor joists come in many types and sizes, but all must be compliant with national safety codes and regulations. A construction or remodeling project must be accurate in planning its joist span and spacing, or project managers may not get their permits to move forward. Find out the right joist material and size for your project, and get started finding the necessary measurements.

Ran into it a lot mostly with the engineered joists. Makes it easier to get pipes and ducts up into the joists when going across at right angles. They come with hole boring schedules that are not intuitive, and opposite of lumber joists, with larger holes allowed as you get away from the load bearing ends. They use crush blocks on the ends that cause trouble with going vertical from floor to floor. I have seen tile jobs crack in the shape of 4x8 plywood flooring when over engineered joists. Here in Florida most everything is masonry and very few homes have basements or upper levels.

Only a cheap ass DIY amateur would do that. No. Only the cheap ass mass production hit and run developers and their minimalist L/ as much as possible do that.
