It never occurred to me... that so many people do not have a clue what a "Board Foot" is...
Kinda amazing actually.
Like watching a man... NOT be able to tie a bowline knot.
-------------------------
Example...
2 x 6 x 10 = 120/12 = 10
1 x 12 x 8 = 96/12 = 8
15 x 1 x 14 = 210/12 = 17.5
If you are not actively engaging EVERY enemy you encounter... you are allowing another to fight for you... and that is cowardice... plain and simple.

Guy called me off of my Fakebook Marketplace listing on Friday wanting to do his basement as a man cave...
28 x 18 square room... 8 foot ceiling
92 linear feet of wall x 8 = 736 SF... add 20% for waste.
Buy 900 SF/BF and be done with the thinking.
He asking how I could do "All that thinking while I was driving"?
Never even occurred to me that everybody couldn't. Seriously.

We take certain things for granted as we do them everyday. I am very guilty of this. When my boys help me with a project ,I can't get it thru my skull that they have never heard certain phrases or actions. In my case,"go grab a 3" 45*",,"that's a 90*,you goof ball"
Not everyone has dropped a tree and ran it on a band saw.

FORGET that there are inches and feet... just simply ignore it... and look at a piece of wood. That piece of wood is a 2 x 6 and it is 10 long... then divide by 12... Makes that piece of wood 10 BF... The inch/feet thing is what confuses most people I think... not sure actually.

It is just a bit confusing to me that so many people know so little about so many things... ...and they ain't holding a cardboard sign... with a tin cup at the intersection.

I was working as a carpenter on a big construction job in Atlanta. We hired this young guy who said he was an experienced carpenter. The Boss told him to bring up an armful of 8 foot 2x4s. The guy was down on the ground at the stack, in a minute he yelled out "Bossman, these boards are 8 foot long, but they are one and a half by three and a half inches!"

Board feet was something you learned in high school shop but after 30 years out I had forgotten how to calculate as I hadn't needed to figure it.
A good and quick refresher here.
The last time that bear ate a lawyer he had the runs for 33 days!

I have had fights with ARCHITECTS... telling me that a 4" DWV will fit in a 2x4 wall. Literally a ONE HOUR argument. Suggesting that I could scarf the back of the drywall for the bell... "As needed".

Yes, I have worked in the woods a bit , and been around mills . Tends to be knowledge , based on ones experience.
Another interesting thing in the industry is the lumber scaler at the mill. One would think it is not as subjective as it is.
My BIL will not haul into a mill until the scaler he knows gets back from vacation.
Now , I have one for you, in the mass dirt business....what is the maximum moisture content of midwestern clay for compaction?

I've done considerable carpenter work in my day. Can't remember a single time I've ever needed to figure "board/feet". Not that I didn't know what it was, just didn't use it.
At one time (1950's), our 4H group had a forestry project. One of the guys was assigned to calculate the "board/feet" of lumber in a specific stand of pine trees. He constructed a device that resembled, IIRC, a big framing square that would estimate the board/feet of the bole of the tree then estimate the height.
The best "carpenter" story I've heard was asking the newbie to give me a measurement. "6 feet 4 inches and (under his breath 1,2,3,4) 4 of those little dit marks!"

I am a retired Survey Crew Chief, from ARDOT. When I first went to work for them in 1967, I was told nobody but whores and carpenters dealt in inches. I later on doing bridge surveys, including surveys to widen existing bridges. I had to measure the existing bridge, deck. substructure, etc. looking for as built vs plans. That was required in inches (carpenters make the forms). Later we went Metric for a while. At one time I was carrying tapes, and survey rods for measuring in feet/tenths, Feet/inches, and Metric, so i have heard a lot of variations on the above post. miles

Are you going to use the white pine logs that you got a month ago? And how many board ft. was that pile anyway?

Bill sold a couple hundred loads off of the job... but kept the prime for me and him. Lots of the wood went to cabin kit builders... as well as overseas importers (Pakastan et al). Yeah I know... very weird. Advertised a load 2-3 months ago that sold as custom. This is a different load (three loads actually). Same load Stick got his G string in a knot over couple of weeks ago. IIRC it was 158 logs. Took 21 hours to mill out. Hard to say on exact BF... but I estimate about 20k total. Been wet and milling got behind.

Old guys making easy things hard.
2x6-8’=8’bf 2x6-10’=10’ bf
And so on. No need for any math.
2x3 is 1/2 of that, so is a 1x6.
2x12 is double.
Figuring a 1x4-58” would really trip up you old timers.
