It was all just marketing.. 1906 ad here. But yeah, let's not call 1906 rifles "Savage 99's". That would just confuse the heck out of everybody.
“ The Savage 99 Pocket Reference”. All models and variations of 1895’s, 1899’s and 99’s covered. Also dates, checkering, engraving.. Find at www.savagelevers.com

Love this old artwork, especially the vine-like font used for the word “Savage”
But this ad would be condemned today woke world for the stupid look drawn on the boy’s face and his badge reading “THE LITTLE SAVAGE”
Adventure is the only thing you buy that makes you richer

I find the ad confusing.. while it talks about the new Featherweight rifle at the bottom (the 1899H to us), this ad makes it look like the 1899H can be had as a takedown. But it's really an ad for takedown in 1899A and 1899A SR only. The 1899H wasn't sold with takedown until 1910. This one that ran a couple months earlier in 1906 is better. Still says Savage 99 Takedown too.

The Savage Quality trademark supposedly dates to 1906 as well.

But some earlier ones show up, starting around 67.000 - date would normally be end of 1905 for those, so likely guns that were finished late.
