The Road by Cormac McCarthy. Takes a whole lot of fun out of the post apocalyptic fantasies.

Ashes books from W Johnstone are entertaining if you're able to sort the diamonds from the coal The Tri States is what we really need in real life if we last long enough
Samey-same Jerry Ahern's Survivalist books
There's a good many on the shelf to read, but a good many today seem to me that the authors genuinely believe that some of these cul-de-sac commandos and the LARPers of yoofloob will actually make it and survive their fantasy subdivision firefights and not be killed or horribly maimed and fatally wounded
Road like posted ^ ^ ^ is probably the most real world because the Man and the Boy actually live by hiding from the pinheads roaming around looking for people to kill and eat, or kill because they get off on it. The movie isn't bad. The Old Man Robert Duvall probably has the premier line of the whole show

Forest Anon's YouTube channel?
Otherwise, I would say The Camp of the Saints by Jean Raspail. A useful book for modern times.

+1 on canning.
Better time spent on non fiction about how folks lived, both rural & urban during the depression, the real deal. The threat & violence part of it can be studied by what's going on everywhere today.

These end of world books and movies got really popular during Obama first 2 terms. Makes sense that they're popular again.
Obama changed the American dream from building your own business to building your own bunker.

The Black Autumn series. Good books on a societal collapse theme.
Also the “299 days” series. Also very good and political collapse theme.
