Many truckers carry a tire thumper. They thump their dual tires on occasion to see if one's flat. Often with duals, it's hard to tell by just looking. A thumper can be a bat, an iron bar, about anything. They also make good head thumpers.

I had a ball peen hammer for a tire thumper, and I was thumping tires 7 days a week. I kept the hammer close at hand in case some nut accosted me.

My Dad was an independent trucker when I was a kid and had a large ball peen hammer for a tire thumper and βotherβ things that needed thumping. I remember when he had a black dude following behind him with his headlights on bright blinding him when the lights hit his driving mirrors. He tried to get the guy to go ahead and pass and waved him on many times out his window. He kept following mile after mile in the flat land of the Delta. Finally, when no traffic coming from ahead, he straddled a center line in a bridge, got out with the hammer, and proceeded to do a tire check down the R side side, and over to the other side. When he went behind the trailer, he thumped the guys headlights too. Got the L side and drove off. It helps keep winos off your running boards waking you up when youβre trying to get in a few hours of sleep behind the business before it opened up to unload his trailer. The wino would offer to unload his trailer and he had already explained that the business had a forklift and he didnβt need his help. After 3X he was out- literally. I still have Old Thumper along with many of his other tools.
