I had a cough for 3 weeks (mostly at night) so I went to my primary doc 3 days ago to get checked out. He prescribed Promethazine-Dm cough syrup and I picked it up yesterday. It has 2 full pages of very dangerous side effects which are much worse for people over 65. You can't drive or go out in the sun! This bottle is going in the local land fill.

What ever happened to all the cough syrups that contained codeine? When I was a teenager I could go the local drug store and buy cough syrup with codeine without a prescription, just had to sign my name in a little book. When I was in the Army we had terpinhydrate (sp?) with codeine that worked great (I think t was 80 proof). About 15 years ago I was prescribed a cough syrup that contained atropiene(sp) that was used for nerve gas and also codeine that worked as good as the stuff we got in the army. A few years later it was no longer available.

Just buying this stuff must have cured me because the cough is gone today.

Lots of the old school cough syrups over the counter Boomsticks grewup with had ingredients that you need a prescription to get nowadays.

About the best you can do, is make your own.
1 shot of Brandy, 1 Tbs honey, 1 Tbs. lemon in a mug.
Top with HOT water. Stir, Sip slowly. repeat as needed.

I invented our old family recipe a few years back. Half and half Frangelico & cheap Dugan’s Dew scotch. Sip it.

But the subject of cough meds? Government restrictions on hydrocodone and codeine cough suppressant have become outlandishly restrictive. There are limits now on how much can be prescribed at once and I believe overall for a patient. Couple of years ago I had what turned out to be bilateral pulmonary emboli but my PCP and I as well thought bronchitis. I had coughing spasms that left me red faced and gasping. Could feel muscles pulling. But no hi-test suppressant for me. Used a ton of the above recipe and a lot of dextromethorphan.

And the same government that lets tons of hard drugs across the border want to save us and our docs from ourselves. Yeah right

Because of a handful of people who abuse the stuff, folks who are actually in need of it for a legitimate purpose no longer have access to it.

If you had a cough, you should whip up some of your famous bathtub Hydroxychloroquine that you can Happy Camper use to crow about.
Made with with grapefruit peels and Comet copied off the Brighteon or some chit. 🤣

I have chronic bronchitis and Congrestive Heart Failure. Hot teas for me with honey and lemon. I take Trelegy every day and Abuterol inhaler as needed. The old homemade cough medicine works best. Whiskey or Brandy with a little honey or sugar heated up helps break up the crud.

Granpa's cough syrup was the [bleep]. It would fudge you up a little though.

It’s like pulling teeth to get a Dr to prescribe codeine cough syrup now. And when they do it’s very very little at a time. Really sucks, as sometimes that’s the only way I’ve been able to stop coughing and get some sleep if I’ve got a bad bug.

You need a different doctor. Many will not prescribe w/codeine but some do. I tell them if I can't sleep at night I'm not going to get better. They are so concerned about addiction.

I told one dipshit doctor "I'm taking some now that is 4 yrs. old, does that sound like I am abusing it ? " He told me to throw the old stuff away and wrote a new script for a small bottle...

I thought to myself, "yeah right"...
