Not wanting to derail the vet thread -- I am interested in what type of de-sensitizing training get for the various roles -- military does it vary depending on the role, first responders (EMS, Fire, Police).

There are not any de-sensitizing programs for PTSD that I am aware of. I don't see a way to do that really as each situation one encounters can and does impact the individual differently. Awareness that you will likely experience a horrifying or traumatic situation and the fact that there now are ways to de-brief after the fact are really the only options. In the CF for example, there is your doctor, the Padre and various supports now available. Most other organizations have adopted similar roles. Having a strong support system of family, friends and others who have BTDT helps too. Post-incident sit downs have become common place where, as a group, the folks soldiers, first responders ect. discuss the incident with a qualified person certainly help, to a certain extent. Much but not all of my "incident exposure" occurred in the days of "It never happened". There was really no one to turn to so internalization of your reactions was the only way to deal with it. Some of the Schitt I experienced if I ever opened up to you would curl your toes as I had a rather interesting career. And, I'm one of the lucky ones. Dark humour helps a bunch too. That's one reason people can't relate to us as well. I hope this answers your question. It would be huge if there was a way to predict when one might be impacted. Jeff

If I slip with some dark humor around family they get spooked. Or offended. But on the light side I have friends in low places. The one thing I get enjoyment out of is shooting up some 22 ammo or some of the things we do with pellet guns. Just think how much that scares the libs. If you are a Believer, prayer and meditation help. Take care Brothers, RZ.
