I’m getting ready to have a 30-06 rebored to 9.3x62. I’m having a hard time deciding which donor to send in.
1. Remington Sportsman 78. Has sights.

2. Interarms Mark X. No sight holes.

I mostly shoot and hunt with Remington 700’s. I’m very used to them, and sights might be nice at some point. And sights look good on a classic cartridge like the 9.3.

On the other hand, I feel like the 9.3x62 should be built on a mauser. Even if it’s not German pedigree. And the safety is similar to a Remington.

More stock options for the Remington if I wanted to change it up. The Interarms does have a pretty nice wood on it.

What would you do?

I personally would do the Mauser. You can add sights as you go if wanted. The 9.3 belongs in the Mauser action as you said. I had JES rebore an 8x57 Brno small ring to 9.3x62 and his work was excellent and the controlled round feed just feels right

I’ll bet that Brno is nice. What length barrel is that? I’m thinking 22” should be about right.

It has a 23” barrel. Sadly I sold it to someone on this site. It is a very light gun. I had the stock refinished with the forend tip and red pad added by a member here also. Another one I should have kept

I'd look beyond the cartridge and decide what I want the finished rifle to be, then look at what it will cost to get there.

If it’s for North America and money is limited, then use the Remington.

If you want a classic rifle and you might take it to Africa and your budget is unlimited, then use the Mauser. But run the numbers on all of the work it will take: the kind of sights you might add, how much they cost, installation cost, etc. Don't forget to include shipping and transfer fees. Some of that stuff is a lot more expensive now than it was before COVID.

If you just want to chase game, then stick with the 30-06 and put your rifle budget into a hunt. I hate to say that because I have an irrational soft spot for the 9.3x62. It's one of the best all-around cartridges ever designed for most hunting.

It will never see Africa. Elk, deer, maybe black bear, and moose if I can ever draw.

It’s going to be a hunting rifle that gets used.

Things would have been so much simpler, although boring, if I would have never bought any more rifles after my first 30-06.

Agree on the 06 argument and the x62 can do the same and more. I would use the Mauser and have feed and function assured.

Mauser all the way. I want that CRF and really it just looks right. But, iron sights are a must as well. I mean, every rifle should have them, but a 9.3x62 absolutely must. It is a caliber for reasonably close range to use on large animals. I hunt for bear and deer with mine in the eastern mountains and the weather often limits practical use of a scope. So, go with the Mark X and add sights or look for a another rifle that already has sights. Simpson LTD for a cheap Husqvarna.

Yes, you should regret letting that one go.

I also have a Remington 725 in 30-06 and an early 60’s Tradewinds Husky H-5000 in 30-06. The Husky is immaculate, but I think I would have a hard time changing either of them.

Probably going to send off the Interarms,…. I think 🤔

Does the 78 front sight have screw holes in the barrel? If so, the barrel might have to be cut back behind the holes in order to have enough meat in the barrel wall thickness after a rebore.

Why?? What’s wrong with a rebore?

I have a 338-06 he has done and been around others, they all shoot good and work fine.

Haven’t shot off the last of them yet. That mag allows them to be seated out quite a bit. If memory serves he was nearing 2700 fps.

I've gone back and forth with this same question. I've long wanted a 9,3x62 and have planned a few but have yet to build one.

I have several jc Higgins 50s and 51s that I wanted to do one on but I thought the barrels were too thin. Turns out jes can reborn those. A fire member just sent me a pic of his the other day.

Other times I kind of want a stainless synthetic on a Remington style action. Something more of an Alaska gun where as the mauser is more African style. I have a 24" stainless 30-06 fluted barrel from an Alaskan ti rifle.

I thought about having it rebored and cut down a few inches or as close to that as I can with the flutes. I'd drop it on a stainless 700 in a carbon stock. A ss 22" fluted rem 700 9.3x62 still appeals to me at times.

I'm about to go through my jc Higgins 50s to pick one to rebore. The one thing I sometimes have had issue with on controlled mausers is that I get used to just dropping one round on top of the mag follower and closing the bolt on my pushfeed rifles. Mausers have to be fed from the mag each time and I forget that on occasion and push a round in the chamber then can't get the extractor over the rim and its stuck. I'm guessing I could modify a mauser giving it more room for the extractor in the cut so it will jump over the rim if I forget.
