This is just too dang good not to post!
No singing, just the simple and awesome story of his life condensed into a short video.
The Main In Black has always been someone that I admired. And this short 4 minute vid tells the story of his addiction, his decision to cash in, and the ultimate redemption of his life and soul.

Pretty sure June wrote that song. But I was a fan of the man.

There is a book by James Webb. Born Fighting, How the Scots-Irish shaped America. It will give you some ideas concerning Johnny Cash's roots and the gritty, strong folks who helped shaped America. Rusty Zipper.

I think all those old Country Music singers had suffered through trials. It’s in their songs, their voices. Many had suffered lost loves, and heartache.
George and Tammy, Waylon, Conway and Loretta, I think all were singing from the heart.
I gotta admit though, them steel guitars and fiddles were always in the appeal. A good steel guitar by itself can almost reduce you to tears!😀
Sometime around the late 80s early 90s though, Country Music seemed to lose its soul.
George Straights “Murder on Music Row” pointed it out clearly.
The feeling wasn’t there in most of what was on the radio. Radios are there to sell records. Young folks buy records, and us old guys were left in the dust!
My grandniece got married, I think it was 2012. She was raised with horses, did alot of barrel racing and such. She married a fellow who also did that.
I was invited to the wedding and reception. I was one of very few wearing a baseball cap.
At the reception, I did what I usually do at such. I got a pitcher of beer and a couple of glasses and made friends with the DJ! (you’d be surprised how much some beer and friendly conversation will get you 😀)
He was playing modern country. But I was raised on real Country, and I got him to playing Johnny Cash, Waylon, Conway and Loretta, and especially Patsy Cline.
The younger crowd went along, at first!😀
But they wanted their music, and I was finally not allowed to request songs!😟
Times change. Either change with them or get left in the dust.
I’m happy here in the dust, listening to the music that I grew up on and love!😀

Yeah, Reon I hear ya.

We used to put a dollar in the jukebox at the tavern on bass Lake west of Weyerhaeuser , Wisconsin.
Get a 12 pack and our casting rods and couple of black floating Bass paints, Hula Poppers and such about 10 .00 at night after the cows were milked . We would float around the lake and cast for Bass and listen to the old songs you mentioned .

Truly the good old days.

Honestly, I think the good old days are gone.
But it’s in the power of We The People to bring them back. Music and movies be damned. But we owe it to our kids, our grandkids, their kids and such forth and so on, but mostly to ourselves and our parents to hand down a functioning democratic republic when we’re gone.
This sure as hell ain’t it.
I’m afraid my heroes are gonna spit on me.

The documentary of Glenn Shirley (writer of Greystone Chapel) is pretty crazy. Even Marshall Grant bailed on that one.

My favorite stories were of Jesse the camper.....

I'm really a big Johnny Cash fan, but he really didn't live life any different than my grandfathers and certainly didn't have a more difficult life than the generation before them, let alone any of them in the middle of a war.

FWIW, Murder on Music Row and Amarillo By Morning were both re-dos of previously recorded songs other people did; equivalent's of Johnny Cash's "Walkin' The Blues" by Leadbelly.

Lucky enough to see Johnny live once. Great show and humble man. Thanks for the post.

Hell, I like that better than the original! With an acoustic guitar alone, he puts soul and a touch of blues into it. It works out very nicely IMHO.
I’m glad you posted this. Thanks!

Another cover from the same guy. He’s got such a soulful voice, over an acoustic guitar, that he really doesn’t need anything else.

Johnny Cash was haunted by his brother's death. But his sound was unique, in part to Luther on guitar behind his vocals. I was glad when young rock fans got behind him for his covers of the songs that they knew. His style and the fact that you could understand the words really gave him a new following.
