Question for those of you that have hunted in Africa. In your opinion which animal is the best eating and why? What is your favorite way of fixing it? Lawdog

I haven't had every game meat every way possible (yet!), but I would have to say the highlight of our trip mealwise, was the night we barbecued fresh Impala tenderloins over a wood fire. Man, were those scrumptious! The Kudu stroganoff one night was wonderful also. Guess you'll just have to go over enough times to try them all, prepared in every way possible, in order to make a choice. Let us know how it comes out! Impala. Kudu steaks are really good too, especially fresh & on the grille (braai) <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif" alt="" /> badger

My first day in camp we had buffalo steak sandwiches with all the fixin's...tender & tasty. I told the cook that's what I wanted everyday for lunch...16 lunches and all superb.
Breakfast in camp was usually just some toast and tea but I quickly convinced the cook that I needed something more substantial to take along in the vehicle.....fried egg & warthog bacon sandwiches were always waiting in the front seat next to my possibles bag.
After fried egg & warthog bacon sandwiches followed by buffalo steak sandwiches for lunch they could have given me mac & cheese for dinner and I would have been happy but we had kudu, impala, buffalo roast, warthog roast and I don't know what else and it was all top drawer....plus of course desert followed by a Cohiba.

My vote goes to the eland. But I must admit, sable, kudu, wildebeest were all superb too. I guess the eland is so close to beef it was hard to tell, but it was certainly the best meat I've ever tasted. Not at all like venison. More like fine steak. jorge

Grilled eland, with kudu a very close second.

Spotted owl tasted the best to me with a close second being bald eagle. Honestly though, osterich is my favorite. Flinch

The meat value according to most locals is Eland, springbok, Black wildebeast, impala, Blesbok, Kudu etc.
Not always in that order, but without a doubt the Eland and Springbok are always in the top few choices. Eland cooked any way is always good and my personal favorite.

I liked Oryx steak the best. The eland was also extremely good but tasted so much like beef that I would put it second on my list. Crocidile is also very good but is it considered a game animal?
All the meals were prepared with a German flare which I found to be a bit bland. Please don't get me wrong, the food was very good but different than my normal taste. Rick

Limpopo bushbuck is also quite tasty. The filets and backstrap is just about as good as any meat I've eaten.

Lawdog One that totally surprised me was grilled tenderloin of Zebra, ranked right up there with the Kudu. Maybe they are close to a horse but it sure was good.

Eland followed by bushbuck, kudu, and warthog. We ate impala most every day, and it was "ok", but not nearly as good as eland and bushbuck. The absolute "worst" thing I ate over there was zebra. That could gag a maggot. Jeff [color:"blue"] [/color]

Eland tastes like beef, so if beef is your standard, that's it. But if you like a slightly different flavor, springbok is very good. Actually any of the anetlope that live in relatively dry country tend to be good, such as kudu, gemsbok, impala, etc., but I have also had excellent zebra-burgers, something most folks wouldn't even think of eating. Have also had excellent elephant biltong, and indeed that's one of the favorites among many locals.
Of course much of it depends on the animal, its care, and the skill of the cook. A big trophy buffalo tends to be pretty tough, even though the flavor is fine. Have tasted a lot of game over there that was ruined by overcooking, just as it us here.

I have also had excellent zebra-burgers, something most folks wouldn't even think of eating. Have also had excellent elephant biltong, and indeed that's one of the favorites among many locals.
A friend of mine grew up all over the world but mostly in Kenya and South Africa -- he took his (American-born, city-raised) fiancee on vacation to Kenya several months ago and to her surprise, zebra turned out to be one of her favorites. However, I think she still won't eat the beef biltong he dries in the A/C closet on the terrace of their condo ... John

My wife likes gemsbok chops. I think eland and reedbuck are both quite good. The most interesting thing I ate was leopard. The meat is white, and more like good lamb or veal in texture. The flavor is mild and "interesting".

What?!?! Leopard, I remember mention of eating Lion in Stewart Edward White's books on African hunting....maybe if I were realllly hungry <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" /> The best are springbok/eland/kudu/bushbuck, although any game meat can be inedible if improperly cooked. Mule deer makes a good point about over-cooking, but it is a bit of a reflex in southern africa as it ensures that any parasites in the meat will be killed!
