Using "collision" instead of "allision" in regards to the recent ship v bridge deal.
dummies, or trying not to confuse the general public?
(apparently allision confuses Mr Rick's spell check thingie, it's got the red underline)

Allision. This term refers to an accident between a vessel and a stationary object. A stationary object is any object that isn’t in motion, for example, a bridge, pier, dock, or bridge. Sometimes ships crash into oil platforms or drilling rigs, causing fires or disastrous oil spills. According to some it not only involves a crash into another ship, but any stationary object. Because rubes like me had no idea allision is a thing? Hey Dutch, I understand perfectly. I'm not sure I'd ever heard the term until a crash into the Bay Bridge in SF Bay a few years back. But now that I know it, I can't "unknow" it.

Meh - collect any large group of people and you're bound to get SMEs on any number of topics - same as any place else in life. What's amazing is you have them, you know them and when something in their wheelhouse comes up - you immediately discount them because the expert analysis doesn't match your preconceived notion. (royal you here, not you specifically smokepole) See it happen all the time across all the subjects here and down fora or across the internet in all social media. PLC’s are hard to hack as they are not casually connected to WAN’s. The supervisory system on ships are not connected to WAN’s, just local networks, not the internet. I have never worked on a cargo ship where the enginecontolroom panels/computors have hade internet/satelite connection. It might exist somewhere, but I have never seen it. (note - an act of terrorism is usually not covered by insurance, so it would be in Maersk's interest for it to be that) No power, no steering.
