Definitely a M700 rear sight, not sure if it’s correct for the gun

I’ve never seen one like that on any 700…ADL, BDL , or Custom. If you do a search for Remington 700 rear sight, you’ll see some sort of like that.

I can’t recall seeing that design of sight on a M700.

That’s the rear off a 788 I believe. I think the 580 series rimfires used the same or similar.

Thats what it appeared to me(788). Just didn’t know if they ever used one on a 700.
The gun is really like new so was suprised that sight was
installed.
So would it use the standard rear sight or a early style?

The Remington Sportsman 78 also used that rear sight.

I’ve been buying (mostly) and selling and fondling 700’s most of my life. I never saw that sight on a 700. Not saying it never happened but I’ve not seen it.
I’ve had a couple 78 Sportsman models. That sight might have been on them??? Tembo is likely right in my opinion. I bought those 78’s new and those sights came off - whatever they were.
Now I gotta look in my sight drawer. I gave more than a handful of 700 and other model Remingtons sights away a couple years ago.

Jeff I think they stopped using the old style rear in 72. The newer one came in 73 ? Mb

Also the 74 Birch version of the 7400 and the 76 birch version of the 7600 used that rear sight. As well as the 78 birch ADL version of the 700.
The hole spacing and screw size is the same so someone found that sight and used it.
I walk around like I'm ok, but deep down inside, I wanna buy another gun.

This is my all original 1985 Rem 700 BDL in 06 for reference. Note the adjustable block for elevation is fairly small and the sight blade is a shallow V. I bought it for the action in a group, and realized it was a very early 700 so have kept it around, VS taking it down.
