Except there is the whole primary election cycle. McCain and Romney got the Republican nominations over other candidates because Republican voters wanted to vote for them in the general election.

I voted for McCain because I sort of liked Sarah's attitude and I was going to vote Libertarian in 2012 but I listened to Democrat lawyer friend who heatedly argued against not voting for Romney. He said "don't you see we have a n****r in the whitehouse". Anyway I did vote Libertarian in 92 and 96 because of the Republican choice available and should have in '08 and '12.
