From A Word On Westerns. I know this subject was discussed a few years back about the falling out between Ford and Ben Johnson. In Ben’s words “I told Ford to go to hell, and that was the end of it.” But it was a long time before Ford gave Ben another part in a movie!
I read Harry Carey JR’s autobiography about working in the Ford Stock Company. “In The Company Of Heroes”, IIRC. From reading it I sorta got the idea Ford was sort of sadistic S ofa B for some of the things he did to his people and the way he treated them. I won’t work for someone who doesn’t respect me. I have proved that twice by walking. Reon
"Preserving the Constitution, fighting off the nibblers and chippers, even nibblers and chippers with good intentions, was once regarded by conservatives as the first duty of the citizen. It still is." Wesley Pruden
When Ben Johnson was in The Last Picture Show he consulted with John Ford Because the movie had nudity in it. Ford convince Johnson to go ahead and accept the part.
Ben Johnson was great in The Last Picture Show - it wouldn't have been the same had he not played in it. ... and it had to be shot in black & white for sure.
