via Lookingglass Creek. Unintentional stocking

https://www.ktoo.org/2024/04/04/salmon-truck-crash-wrong-creek/

a portion of the story

Quote
First, the good news. When a 53-foot fish tanker truck crashed and rolled upside down on an embankment next to a creek in northeast Oregon, its driver suffered only minor injuries. And as the truck came to a rest, its tank settled downhill, next to the water.

That last detail was crucial for the truck’s cargo: some 102,000 spring chinook smolts, or young salmon, that had been raised in a hatchery. The truck overturned on a twisting road that mirrors Lookingglass Creek — and some 77,000 fish made it from the tanker into the creek’s fresh, inviting water, according to the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife.

But there is also bad news: 25,529 smolts died, recovered from the tanker and the bank of the creek. And the fish that survived are now living in the wrong waterway.

The fish had been raised at Lookingglass Hatchery to give a population boost to wild salmon in the Imnaha River, around 90 miles to the east.

When it's time to migrate, will they find their way downstream? If they make it to the ocean, which stream will they come back to?

It's time for them to migrate now, that's why they were being released.

Odds are good they will return to where they were released instead of where they were intended to go. There is always some straying, so a few may end up in their intended place.

I wouldn’t ODFW will make a new regulation outlawing fishing for them.

Grande Ronde has a small Chinook run all the way up through Minan and Wallowa. I wonder if this spill will affect that in any way?

Just kidding. Will be on the John Day in June trying to help kill the small mouth one fish at a time.

Then the Grand Canyon in July. No salmon runs there, though...

You'll have a great trip on the JD. A number of years ago I canoed 100 miles of it, ate fish the whole way. Bring taco fixings!

I have a friend, from grade school, just bought a couple hundred acres near Dayville. I need to get up there to try out his riverfront for fishing.

Are you talking spring or fall chinook? The smolts that got away were springers according to the article and they expect a few hundred more adults to return in a few years.

Quote
“The 77,000 fish that made it into Lookingglass Creek will likely return there and produce approximately 350-700 additional adults.”

and therefor the adults returning to the Imnaha will be fewer than "planned"

No one knows for sure given river conditions, possible transportation past the dams, predation, and ocean conditions.

Do you know anything about that creek longarm? If there's predatory fishes in there, squawfish, smallies, catfish, etc they just got a bonus feeding.

Do they have a season on them now?

They are Federally listed as threatened, but that might just mean a short season and low take limit.

I hooked one in the grande ronde downstream from Minam a few years ago in late September. That float from Minam to Troy is one I've done at least a half a dozen times. Anyway it wasn't the target species I was going for (was after steelhead) and I'm too martini- lazy to get up right now and check the regs, but as I recall all Chinook were protected, as are the Bull Trout. But I'm not 100% on that.
I haven't fished the Lookingglass, but smallmouth do seem to be moving up a little bit each year in the Grand ronde, so I don't see what would keep them from doing the same thing the next drainage over.

I'll be up there again in exactly 20 days!

Have fun up there. I miss that country to the north of there in WA. Never made it to the Grand Ronde or Wenaha, always seemed to have enough to do in WA.

Catch a bunch of them smallies and help the salmon!
