One of the animals on my bucket list that I have not taken is a Black Bear. I live in GA but can drive or fly just about anywhere. I am not interested in Alaska as I have been there a few times and would rather keep it to the lower 48 and Canada. I’d rather not hunt over bait but I know that is common with bears. Any recommendations for states, provinces or specific outfitters? My main goal is having a nice rug for my gun room!

Check out Copper River Outfitters in Smithers,BC. I know and have hunted with Jim in NWT for moose. Spot and stalk with a two bear option. Top notch guy and is honest as it gets.
May not be the cheapest compared to a bait hunt but a lot more fun. If it's a bucket list hunt, do it right and don't skimp. It will be an experience you will remember till your last breath.

Give these folks a call. My buddy and I have been there in the spring 3 times. Filled our tags every time. They have an astounding population of bears in their area. The hunts go from Saturday to the following Friday. The camp usually has all tags filled by Tuesday.

Just to the north of you in NC they take some of the biggest black bear in the nation. I'm betting a google search could turn up someone that will hook you up.

Black bears are likely the most common big game in NA, aside from whitetails. There’s lots of options.
Any preference as to color or time of year, spring or fall? As a (very) general rule the further inland you get and the drier the area is, the more color phases you’ll run into.
If you’ve never hunted behind bear hounds it is something to behold.

If your main goal is a bear rug, I bet you could just buy one somewhere.

You are 100% correct MAC, coastal NC has some huge bears, I think they only have a fall hunt. Don’t have to bait they just hunt the bean fields spot and stalk. Bears do not hibernate, have great feed and grow to immense sizes. Thinking about going myself.

You can hunt them cheap OTC and take 2 in the unit I live in. It's becoming more popular as elk and deer are in decline and seasons get shortened.
