I am not really familiar with the term. But I will hazard a guess.

Sucrose twists light in one direction while "invert sugars" are called so because they twist light the other direction. Glucose, fructose, and I think raffinose are invert sugars.

The axis or of polarized light rotation is called dextrortary (right) and levorotary (left). Honey is invert sugar, the bond that connects the glucose and fructose molecules is "up" while in sucrose it is in the low position or down thus having less energy and also exists as a solid at room temp, while honey is a liquid

D and L isomers are important in proteins, as an example D-Tryptophan is not active in the body while the L-Tryptophan is. This is true for all the amino acids.

Close, but no cigar. The glucose and fructose exist in honey as monosacharides. They are not connected except in the small amount of sucrose which also makes up honey.

Neither glucose, nor fructose exist as a liquid at room temperature, except in solution. As is true of sucrose.

Our Prof in Chem 101 explained this was also true of ascorbic acid.

He went on to tell us that natural sources included both forms, so our bodies could only make use of half of that ingested.

While manufactured Vitamin C could be made entirely of the active form. Thus was twice as potent per grain as was the naturally derived versions.

Idaho, no offense, but you are going to quickly find yourself out of depth. Etoh might be the last person on this board with whom I would want to have an enantiomer argument.

I would not argue with him about enantiomers.

I can argue with authority in regards to chemistry of sugar.

during my high school days, I used to work for a beekeeper, and after a before sunrise smoke down of the hives, we would extract the honey with steam centrifuge, and add a water/sucrose mix to increase the "yield". Working with bees is a religious experience. Never stung once, bees can tell if belong there or not.
Sounds like Idaho Shooter may have some private hives.

I was trying to give the difference between the sugars (which are all alcohols by the way)and the post on polarized light and rotation.

from an organic chemistry point of view invert sugar has a higher energy in the bond that join the glucose and fructose molecule to form sucrose. period.

the rotation of light is directed towards the DL forms of amino acids.

we can go to enzymology 301 now, if you want, and look at the Krebs cycle, and how your body recognizes the differences in the sugars, and the DL forms in protein metabolism

or we can go to Bio-Engineering 601 and examine how Dextrans (sugars) are used in time release drug patches.

or we can go to post-doc. 01 math and examine the differential non-linear equations kinetic rate equations and their inter-reactions on either a time scale or plotted as phase diagrams in 3- dimensions

How are you currently using your chemistry expertise?

@jameslavish

If you work 40 hrs/wk: at 5% inflation and after 5 years, you need a 28% pay raise or to work 44 more hours (*one full extra week* per month+) to make up the difference.

as a side note on the polarized light. polarized light microscopes are used in analytical labs to identify drugs, and crystals, chemicals. They measure the plane of polarized light and are very specific.

and if you want, I'd be happy to discuss the differences between sugars and their, nuclear magnetic resonances, infrared and mass spect. properties as well as there X-ray diffraction patterns

currently I'm trying to retire, and just shoot 5 days a week, but I keep getting good contract work. Currently engaged in intra-vaginal bio-disintegration strips containing hormones for prevention of cervical cancer under NIH grant.

I thought you might have have been hinting at vitimin A, but that is all trans carotene.

Awesome. Good luck in your pursuit of retirement.
