Folks,

I have a Zeiss riflescope which had a claw mount ring clamped and glued to the scope objective I have since removed the ring but the glue/epoxy remains. Any idea how to remove the cured glue without damaging the scope objective?

Scope works fine. On the european ring mount they glue it in position. I've removed it and now would like to remove the glue chemically if possible without altering the painted finish.. might be imposssible. Have been thinking of putting it in the lathe and turning it down ......very carefully.

A little heat can be used to remove epoxy, I just don't know how you would apply it, unless you tried a soldering iron...again carefully.

I have found that a good paste type paint remover will soften epoxy. I have never had a problem with it damaging anodized aluminum scope tubes, but it would be a good idea to test it in an inconspicuous place first.

I would not risk applying enough heat to a scope to melt epoxy, but that's JMO.

Shooter's Choice on a patch. Cover the epoxy with the wettened patch and let it sit for ten or fifteen minutes. At the end of that time, lift the patch and scrape the rubberized epoxy with your fingernail.

Just be patient; if it doesn't work the first time, do it a second time. Don't rush the treatment.

I've removed the broken gold mounting pegs from hundreds of natural and cultured pearls in this manner. The Shooter's Choice, give time, will defeat the epoxy. If there is any material in the world that can be messed up easily, it is pearl nacre (crystallized calcium carbonate) and, happily, Shooter's Choice does not affect nacre in the slightest.

Thats the key.....I think. Finding a solvent that won't take off the original finish. The scope appears to be the pre anodized style...bake on???

Any other experience or suggestions?

We kept a full case of Shooters at the store. It worked wonderfully on pearl pegs and other stuff, when we had the time and wanted no risk of damage.

Put the scope in the freezer for a few hours. The epoxy will pop right off when you take it out of the freezer.
