Heading to Montana for bears in the 2nd and 3rd week of May, any Fire members that could provide info on the current snow conditions? I know things could change quite a bit in the next month, just trying to do some initial due diligence on my end.
Have some areas picked out where I’ve seen a lot of fall bears, but I’m concerned they’re still a little high in elevation for mid May.

Bears are up and moving already in NW Montana, not every bear dens up on the peak of the mountain. I usually take a week of leave around Mother’s Day to hunt bears, this year I will be going earlier.

Central MT has the lowest snowpack currently since 1966. It has been snowing however.

Scorpion: The snowpack this year (as of April 8th 2,024) is well below average. Southwest Montana is running 76% to 83% of normal snowpack in our various mountain ranges. I tried to link to my source but its a "gov" agency and not doable. I plan on getting out earlier than normal this spring. Good luck and drive careful. Hold into the wind VarmintGuy

Once VarmintGuy mentioned that I actually looked those up. I don’t know why that didn’t come to mind before posting this thread. Lots of valuable info there that should help with the planning before we can get boots on the ground.

Comparing MT & Utah Utah has had another exceptional water year...average of 130% My irrigation water guy to expect 'free water' until July 1st Last year it ran till Aug 1st IIRC This meaning irrigation usage is not monitored/measured until then https://wcc.sc.egov.usda.gov/reports/UpdateReport.html?report=Utah
