I'd say get it if you want one. 375 won't buy a lot these day's. I haven't seen one for sale in my neck of the woods in quite a while.

My buddy sold me an old Model 158 in 30-30 that also had a 20 gauge barrel with it for $200 dollars.
Someone had put a set of synthetic stocks on it and painted the barrel and receiver brown and they wasn’t neat about.
It’s ugly but my will she shoot.
The thing loves Hornady Leverevolution bullets and powder.
If…..it shoots like mine, it will be worth the money.
Especially in light of the prices the typical lever action is bringing now.

On the high side but the guns have went up since they quit making them. I'd probably get it if it were me.

I see them in Canada for around $ 400+ since production stopped on then. As far as I am concerned they are an under rated rifle.

The end of H&R/ NEF brought the beginning of CVA and Henry, etc. Brian

Prices vary a bit around the country. The barrels alone are bringing $250+ on fleabay. If it's what you want, buy it, you won't regret it. Rimed cartridges and single shots go together like peanut butter and jelly. I have and have had lots of H&R's and have yet to see a 30/30 or 45/70 that wouldn't group very good. My 30/30 shots factory Remington 170 gr Core Lokt so well I haven't even dug out my reloading stuff.

Get it. Life is short. Who cares if the price is off by fifty bucks either way. You can always make more money. Your time is precious. Enjoy it.

You guys are right, so went back and got it today. Looking forward to loading some spire points for it, and do some accuracy tests.
Not sure what to scope it with, I have alot of glass laying around. Kinda thinking about mounting a nice old El Paso Weaver 3X I have had for awhile .

That’ll be a good combo. I ended up putting an old El Paso Weaver 2.5 on mine. Works great!

Unless you're just wanting to, you won't have to
use pointy projectiles in this firearm.
All the H&R/NEF 30/30's I've had did just fine with
the same FP/RN 30/30 loads I've used for my
Marlin levers, and kilt dears ( no bars)
Good Luck with it
You'll enjoy it for sure

Glad you picked it up!

I bought a synthetic stocked 30-30 about 6 years ago at a gunshow. Kept it for a little while and sold it to fund something else that I can’t even remember. I have missed it pretty regularly! Not a smart decision on my part as it was almost a perfect woods bumming, ATV size rifle. Shot wonderfully!

I keep hopping to walk up on another. May have to broaden my search🤣

Congrats on picking it up! I’m sure you will enjoy it

Wow, pleasently surprised. After mounting the 3x Weaver, took it to the range. Got it on the paper at 25 yds, then tryed the 100 yd target. Got about a 2 " 3 shot group. Then proceeded to ring a steel 12" plate 2 out of 3 times at 208 yds !
This was with factory Rem. 150 cor-locs.

H&R Handirifles are all over the place in pricing. I just checked Gun Broker and they are priced from $300 to $900. It's interesting to me because I just listed one for a friend in 35 Whelen with scope mounts and rings a peep sight installed and 2 but stocks, one high comb for scope use and one standard for iron sights. He said to ask $450 or $500 with a set of loading dies.
But if you want one and there is one for $375 in the caliber you want it would seem wise to me to pay it and be happy. Comparing the prices, $375 is not very high

I really want one in .30-30 for cast bullet shooting. What I'd really like is a Half-Pint Sharps, Taylor's is supposed to have them but rotsa ruck in them having one. Or a Repro High Wall.

I have everything for .30-30, so haven't given much thought to a .38-55.

Congrats on the rifle, and by the way, recently acquired a semi-rough example in .45-70 for 350 dollars. It cleaned up nice but prefer my High Wall.

I have a 1-3x20 Weaver on mine. I keep thinking I’ll put something in the 2-7 range on it but I never have.

I reamed mine to 30-30 AI and love it. Cases don't stretch any and speeds increased a good bit. I hit 3000fps with Hornady and Barnes 110gr bullets. Accuracy was better at 2850fps so I settled there.

I tryed loading some 125 grain Remington spire loints and some Sierra 125 grain spitzers . Ended up with a very unsightly bulge in neck, at base of bullet .

I'm a hard head sometimes on rifle prices when I remember what guns cost in the past. Especially with the H&R Handi rifles. I will admit to paying more for my 30-30 I bought last year than I wanted to. I'd looked for years for one in super clean, like new, factory original condition. When I finally found it, I drove 5 hours round trip to put my hands on it. Yes, I got the price down, but still paid the most I've ever paid for a Handi rifle. I've learned passing up something I've wanted over a few dollars is foolish. Good job by you buying yours.

I don't know what is causing your bulged cases. I've done some initial loading with 150 Gold dots and 125 gr. Sierra Pro Hunters. My rifle shows promise. I used the Hornady OAL tool and modified case to determine proper and safe OAL for those bullets. Link to my range day thread below.

Most of the H&Rs seem to suffer from the same comb-height challenge as the Henry SS, though aftermarket fixes and maybe some factory options may be more widely available. With that in mind, I’be be inclined towards a new Henry at about $500 with its nice checkered walnut stock and excellent factory service on tap as opposed to a slightly cheaper used H&R. The other option is the CVA Scout with its ambi stock fully suitable for scope use, if limited to plastic. CVA also has multiple straight-wall choices.

All that said, the OP’s H&R looks light and handy, something the Henry really isn’t. Not sure about the CVA as I’ve only messed with the ML version which is pretty beefy as well.

Another bullet worth trying is the 110gr Speer HP, the one that looks like a handgun bullet. That one, loaded to 1500 or so is instant death on foxes and chucks, and can be had pretty cheaply when available.

EDIT: Looks like the closest CVA comes to a .30/30 is a .300 BO. Close enough for some I suppose….
