My Uncle Ray was a radio operator on a B24 in Britain, 1943 until they day they got shot up over Berlin. They "landed" safely in Switzerland on 2 engines and spent the last 5 or 6 months interred.
Two years ago we hosted the Commemorative Air Force at my airport, and a B24 was one of the aircraft that came. I was shocked to learn that Uncle Ray's radio position was sitting on top of a centerline fuel tank!
I told him once about a film clip from a FW 190 that was right on the tail of a B24 and pouring fire into it. His comment, with a smile, was "yeah, they sure come apart when they get pounded like that."
He was always so nonchalant about when we would talk, it was like he could put all the fear and anxiety about it in a box in his mind. He was quite a man, he left us 8 years ago.
Pershing 1A. No city too big, no populated area too small. We even get the roaches.
