I recently purchased a Rem. 700 LSSS. Is there any way to take the shine off this stock without riuning its looks? Can I apply a satin urethane finish over the factory finish or do I need to sand or steel wool this stock to a to knock off the shine? I need some help.

Haven't done it myself, but have seen the results of going over a stock w/ 0000 steel wool. Takes it down to a nice subdued satin finish.

For generations of stockmakers the standard to reduce gloss is rottenstone on a felt pad with mineral oil. Rub in long strokes rather than small circles to reduce blending issues.
In general matte finishes should be avoided. Matting agents put in finishes do not help the finish, only dull it. Most matting agents weaken finish and some do worse...
Steel wool should not be used on stocks. Tiny particles stick in the finish and rust. The little freckles may not be visible without magnification, but they are there and they rob luster. art
Mark Begich, Joaquin Jackson, and Heller resistance... Three huge reasons to worry about the NRA.
