I finally drew a tag for first muzzleloader season in my favorite NM unit. Will use my 54 cal Hawken. If I am able to walk far enough past the 4 wheelers I expect a good hunt.

Congrats prairie dog shooter and good luck! I'm another 54 cal fan.
Enjoy!

Love hitting them 54 and 58 roundballs. Good luck to you. I expect a high country tag here. It'll be a roundball of some size here too.

Not to hijack this thread, but I'm a lock for drawing a Colorado MZ deer tag. Not going to be lobbing no round balls though. Draw is in another month.
Just shot some Federal BOR Lock bullets this past week out of my CVA Accura using the Williams Western Precision irons. Things are looking good with both 777 2Fg and BH 209. My 61 y.o. eyes can still get a decent sight picture at 100 yds with the right target.
You Hawken guys are crazy. Using a powder horn, spit patch, etc. Nothing wrong with getting close to your quarry though.

My muzzleloader hunting anymore is for the enjoyment I derive from more traditional equipment. Not matchlock or flintlock traditional, but definitely caplock! Lol! 54 cal RB propelled by Goex FFg. Was a time I cast, and loaded, 72 cal RB for use in a couple old hammer SxS I had, also propelled by Goex FFg. Those 72 cal RB almost got me kicked out of the shooting club, they were breaking the mounts for the steel plates!

I'd like to try a 62 or 69 roundball sometime. I bet that 72 would do some work.
