I used a Scout 44 mag last year. I chose it over my Henry 357 and NEF 45-70. Illinois is noted for big deer and politicians with small brains.

Get a 350 Legend and call it good. Cheaper to shoot than the slug guns now a days, almost no recoil, and with the right gun/load/shooter I'd call it a 200 yard deer slayer.
They say everything happens for a reason. For me that reason is usually because I've made some bad decisions that I need to pay for.

I'd get the 400 legend instead. Little more pop is always good. I think savage has a bolt gun now that is affordable

I think the 45/70 will do it all. It has to be a single shot.

If you're a handloader, the .357 Maximum with 180 gr. Speer bullets and a case full of AA1680 will be hard to beat in a single shot. I've been using one for years for deer in Iowa from a single shot pistol. 250 yard gun with that above combo.

Was out shooting one if my ruger 44 carbines. Shot a box of winchester white box. 60 yards and peeps. Can keep in the black all day. Have drt deer with it. 44 rem mag is a viable option
