I pursued that route simultaneously, ExChippy. That was part of the trial and error. Watched Larry Potterfield's video a few times. Let's just say there's a little tiny S&W plunger spring somewhere in my house. And a sheared off adjustment screw...).

But also, I wanted to understand what caused the problem, not just fix it.

I certainly commiserate with you in your quest to get to the bottom of this. However, at times, discovering the cause of a problem can prove to be most elusive until the right question can be asked in just the right way. But, while you struggle to learn the true cause, the most practical answer must be: A problem cured is a problem no more.
