I'm only aware of family members who served in the CSA. My sister has a couple of letters from one family member who died in a POW camp and I have a dagger from another.

Two great, great... uncles served in an Ohio unit.
One died at Chickamauga, the other at Missionary Ridge.

I do have ancestors who fought ….

Making beer, maybe, in Germany, or Lutefisk in Norway.

my family on both sides are from West Virginia ,during the Civil War ,on my dads side fought for the Union .on my moms side ,they fought for the Confederacy

Had 2 relatives die fighting with the Union Army. I figure my family is paid up on the reparation buIIshi+.

One of my wife’s great great grandfathers rode with Nathan Bedford Forrest’s cavalry until Shiloh and then he was transferred to an artillery unit as a replacement.

The story was that a portion of the unit rode up to his house and he was told to get his rifle and his horse and come along. We have his traveling trunk downstairs.

None here, my ancestors were all slaves at that time.

My paternal great grandfather and his two brothers fought in the Georgia Infantry for the confederacy. One of my mother's grandfathers fought for the Tennessee confederacy and another for the Arkansas confederacy.

Great Great Grandfather was a private in the 18th Virginia Calvary although. he lived in what was newly formed West Virginia. Captured in Romney WV right before Gettysburg while on leave. Spent the remainder of the time in Point Lookout MD POW camp. Best $ 150.00 I ever spent on a book for this information. I have visited the gravesite as well. I had no idea about any of this until I started a genealogy report on my fathers' side.

Pension roles are useful. There are regimental ? records for each state, alphabetical. One of our "uncles" was supposedly a Yankee. Turned out he was a captain for the South. Rumor had him to be a black market profiteer. No children. That was deemed providential reward for his sins.

First of all 75 percent of my ancestors were still in Europe at the time. I have found Three ancestors that fought in the Revolution War. But have not found any in the Civil War.

1st thing I thought, Revolutionary or before.....

Tons, I can think of six right off the bat. Revolutionary too.

Pennsylvania Artillery. They marched All the way down to Andersonville.

I'm from a long line of "good old rebels" from Tennessee and Virginia, I don't have to much info on my fathers side but I have all the info from my mothers side. It was a tough time for people on both sides but with the North winning it got a lot tougher on the Southerners after the war.

Don't know too awful many details.
Both sides of my ancestors fought
for the confederate states during the
war between the states.
On my daddy's side with the injuns, the
one ( who I'm assuming was my great-great),
served in Grinsted's Arkansas Infantry.
I know that because of his elaborate
grave marker where it says so. I'm
figuring he probably distinguished himself
because of the elaborate marker when the
rest of the family buried in adjacent plots
have the plainest of plain stone markers
and a couple have red east Texas iron
ore homemade markers with the names
scratched into the rock. Some of the
other distant cousins have "CONSCRIPT "
In addition to the information.
The first American on momma's side was
a limey that was probably considered an
indentured slave in that his daddy put him
on a ship to serve for payment ( age 11 or 12?)
and after he'd served, him and his bud
wanted to be mountain men and fur trappers.
Hopped off at NOLA and started up towards
the miz working and earning their way up,
and they got volunteered to go fight the
mexes at Matamoros. Did that then went
to CA in '49 to dig gold. Then this and that
until the war between the states. Can't remember
all the details of that, but yes at least 2
ancestors in the CSA

Wife's Great Grandfather was from Iowa, book was written about his company "University Recruits" He was killed during the Battle of Shiloh in the Hornets Nest.
His brother ( wife's Great Uncle )was Company Commander and later elected to Congress. His statue stands in the City Square in Clermont Iowa

I have a bulls eye canteen from one of my ancestors with his initials scratcehed on it. Dad has quite a few letters sent to his great aunt from a suitor/soldier, and we have quite a bit of correspondence between an ancestor of my wife and his mother. Pretty fascinating to read about the hole in his uniform "but none in me", or telling General Sherman what he thought about reveille.

4th great Grandfather, (avatar picture), Major with the 34th North Carolina Troops. His brother was also with the 34th. The Major's uniform blouse, complete with rank, is still in the family, a great uncle (96 years old) has it displayed in his living room.
