Watched the opening credits of Cannonball Run. Realized - it might be the greatest ensemble cast movie ever. What else has this level of participants, especially relative to their star power at the time?

Burt Reynolds, Roger Moore, Farrah Fawcett, Dom DeLuise, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., Jack Elam, Adrienne Barbeau, Terry Bradshaw, Jackie Chan, Peter Fonda, Jimmy 'The Greek' Snyder, Mel Tillis etc

Every once in a while they do a movie that is basically for the fun of the actors.

(Or maybe to pay off someone's bills)
"Get Shorty"
Was another.

Maybe done to set up a trust fund once Uma got knocked up?

Cannon Ball Run had a great cast, and I loved Dr Van Helsing!
A Bridge Too Far (1977) was pretty heavily casted as well.
My vote though would go to Its a Mad Mad Mad Mad World! In 1963 it was a who’s who if top actors and comedians, and it had dozens of folks making a cameo in just one or two brief scenes,
Who else would have put the stooges in an airport fire department for a 5 second camera shot?😀
Probably a few that we’re missing.

Everyone in the cast was a star.

Mel Brooks is very generous in that regard, especially in cameo appearances for actors whose careers have stagnated. Silent Movie, Blazin Saddles, etc. come to mind.

The 1962 D Day movie, The Longest Day, had a number of stars or stars to be.

I like John Wayne movies and his cast of regulars. The Searchers is the best. Gone with the Wind had a good cast and truths in it. Cohen Brothers films usually have a great cast, He’ll or High Water and No Country for Old Men. I agree about Tombstone. Usually any movie with Robert Duvall has great casting.

  • Jerry Lewis
  • Peter Falk
  • Eddie "Rochester" Anderson
  • Terry Thomas
