There seem to be 1 million options and I’m out of the game on this type of purchase so help! Looking in the 1000-1500 dollar range.

"Simple" would be a Burris FFII 3-9x40 with ballistic plex for $130.00. Exorbitant is what you are looking for..

that's actually a solid suggestion under the the OP's criteria no matter the price tag

You’re getting good advice here. This example resonates with me. Almost all of my scopes are fixed power. I’ve killed several animals between 200-250 yards with a Leupold 3X Big Bore scope with a heavy duplex reticle.

If you can live w/o the illumination, or spending an extra $grand on glass?

Leupold VX-3i 2.5-8x36mm

Have one riding a .270Win.

No complaints.

Yes, the one variable I have on a big game rifle is an older Leupold 2.5-8x36. The major reason I haven’t replaced it with a fixed power is because many years ago I sent it to Premier Reticles for one of their special reticles — I believe it is a 4A. That’s a great combination on my 30-06. Older members here may remember when that was commonly done and then for some reason the relationship between Leupold and Premier felt apart.

Seems like a high end 4x would be about as simple and effective for the use you described as it gets, if you can find one. Other than that a non dial type Burris or Leupold variable for a lot less money than you mentioned would do the job. Lots, probably most of those hunting rifle type scopes last for decades. I've got a 1989 mfg 3.5x10 Leupold I bought used back in the 90s that's seen a lot of use on a 30-06. It still is as clear as the day I got it and holds adjustments perfect.

Two that I use for what you mentioned, and really like, are:

NF SHV 3-10 w/Forceplex - available new

S&B Klassic 6x42 - tough to find new but they pop up used from time to time

What do you have on the rifle now?

Why not simply zero the rifle 2.5 inches high at 100, on at about 250, a bit low at 3, save 1K dollars, and use the bucks to buy ammo /components, and practice?

This is my idea of a "simple scope" but you have a pretty strong budget for "simple". Have two, like them a lot! Leupold 5HD 2-10x42

plenty good brand scopes out there get a 30 tube scope and put steel scope mounts on your rifle , maybe picatinny mounts? use a magnet to tell if mounts are steel or not. good luck and enjoy your rifle,Pete53

My simple scopes all say Leupold, Weaver or Nikon and have killed deer just fine right up to the buzzer from 5-285 yards.

I pulled a scope off of another rifle to do some load testing with this one. I will need to purchase a scope.

Lots of good options if wanting new. A Swarovski Z3 or Zeiss V4 in whatever magnification you want. I also have a Meopta Meopro with a BDC reticle for $415 shipped if you want a used scope.

Hi Simple,

I would search for a GOOD 4x32/36 or a 6x36/42.
For variable one, I would try to find a Kahles Helia C or Zeiss Victory Diavari 1,5-6×42 or 2,5-10×50. With Nr 4 reticle. Or the mentioned 2,5-10×40 Bausch & Lomb/Bushnell Élite 4200 with duplex reticle The fist ones Kahles/Zeiss are FFP reticle. I like it! The B&L/Bushnell Élites 4200 have SFP reticle. All extremely good and strong scopes!!!

Here's the Leupold 5HD 2-10x42 on a Win 70 LA, I will add that a 30mm scope can make a lite rifle seem a bit top heavy.

Bob, that’s a beautiful setup. Thanks for sharing that.

My build is a Rem 700 short action with a #2 sporter contour fluted and threaded at 18” to run my banish 30 suppressor. This scope is in the running for sure. I think it would sit ok on my rifle.

Thinking a GOOD 4x or 6x could work well for your use. Just returned from some load workup for my 8x68S Mauser which has a 4X Zeiss with heavy post in claw mounts. I'm always amazed by how clear that class is. Bullet holes a 100 yards were easy to see.

That is essentially the same glass that is in the VX-6HD. 6HD comes with 6x instead of 5x power, alumina flip up covers, electronic leveling, and a throw lever. If the price difference isn't worth those things, then the VX-5HD is a solid option.

While the LEUPOLD VX-5HD and VX-6HD have same glass I believe the Duplex in the 5HD models is a much wider Duplex than that in the 6HD models and I think they may be a bit thicker inner plex lines on the 6HD as well.
