I have very limited experience with the CX on game but, in 2019, a large group of us used 180gr. GMXs exclusively on a Benelli/Hornady writer's hunt in RSA. Between hunting and culling we shot around 100 animals over the course of the hunt raging in size from springbok to eland. The GMX performance was excellent across the board-- I don't believe that a single animal was lost. Weight retention was excellent with all of the bullets that we recovered. You could line them up on the bar and basically tell the impact velocity based on the expansion. I came away a big fan and look forward to trying the CX on more than just paper before long.

All interesting reading. I'd add some but headed out in a few minutes for an NRL Hunter match for the next 3 days.

geez. how hard was the load workup? I have heard they are way easier to load for accuracy than barnes.

If you have time I'd still appreciate the benefit of your expertise with regard to the 139 grain Hornady CX and H4350 in the 7mm-08.

Closing statement on Barnes LRX and TTSX:

Regardless of petals lost or found, recovered bullets are most often taken from dead critters. Mission accomplished.

Somehow missed this one. Have never used the 139 CX in the 7mm-08, but based on experience with other spitzers around 140 grains and H4350, suspect there's not enough room in the case to get close to top velocities, and have the rounds still fit in standard "short action" magazines.

I've loaded 47 grains of H4350 which is compressed even loaded for the length of a Ruger 77 Hawkeye magazine which is longer than a Remington 700. Velocity is 2770 fps 12' from the muzzle and there are no signs at all of excess pressure. Accuracy is excellent with two consecutive groups going 3/4" and 1/2" a couple days ago when I adjusted the zero. I can happily leave it at that for what I would use that load for. Having said that, would Varget be a better choice or is it simply a problem of a short cartridge and a rather long bullet?

My next move is to work up a load with the 139 grain Hornady SST for hunting deer in farm fields. Then I will say a little prayer to have the good luck that they shoot to the same point of impact.

As an aside, I free floated and bedded the rifle right away when I received it which I first learned how to do from an article of yours a long time ago. I also snipped half a coil off of the trigger spring to get it a smidge under 4lbs based on your advice somewhere along the way.
