Is anyone considering the possibility that the govt wouldn't have to worry about autonomous military equipment NOT following orders to fire in American citizens?
If ordered to fire on fellow citizens, AI would follow those directives to the letter. A human pilot may not, and even worse, become a problem to those who issue such orders.
All those AI vehicles still need mechanics, weapons loaders, fuelers, spare parts, logistics support etc.
Yep. Boston Dynamics needs to ramp up their "aircraft maintainer" development...
Is AI going to fuel, arm, and maintain those planes? If somebody decides to cross a few wires while gassing one up, there's no telling what might happen when it tries to take off. A handful of marble-sized rocks down an air intake does funny things to jet turbine blades. Back in the dark ages it was known as "fragging" and a lot of 2nd.Lieutenants with stupid ideas never got to pin on a silver bar.
EGLIN AIR FORCE BASE, Fla. - The 96th Test Wing and 53rd Wing welcomed the first three F-16 Fighting Falcons ready to take part in the Viper Experimentation and Next-gen Operations Model – Autonomy Flying Testbed program.
VENOM-AFT is designed and funded to accelerate testing of autonomy software on crewed and uncrewed aircraft. VENOM-AFT complements the Autonomy Data and AI Experimentation proving ground at Eglin and informs the Collaborative Combat Aircraft program and other autonomy developers.
USAF has been working toward a drone wingman tech for a while. One F 35 with a few drones out in front a few miles to take all the risks.
What could go wrong?
If you can not find a USAF pilot willing to drop bombs on American Citizens, just send a drone to do it.

LOL, didja just get home from hysterics training?

The F 16, while being 50 year old technology, is a very capable air combat and ground attack platform with recent stealth enhancements. The original concept was a budget aircraft as an alternative to the high end air superiority fighters leading defense contracts.
The plane will be more economical built en masse and without need for a life support system, and it will have more room for weapons and fuel. The cost of AI development is high, but once produced is practically free to replicate for additional units.
Heck, we could partially fund the cost of our aircraft with profits on foreign sales.
I see the production of autonomous F 16s in mass as analogous to production of the M4 Sherman during WW II. It was inferior to almost every apposing tank on the battle field. But we were set up to produce them and made almost 50,000 during the war. What they lacked in capability, they made up for in availability.
If it takes six autonomous F 16s to overwhelm an apposing top end fighter, at least we won't be sending crews to their death.

The YF-16 was developed by a team of General Dynamics engineers led by Robert H. Widmer. The first YF-16 was rolled out on 13 December 1973. Its 90-minute maiden flight was made at the Air Force Flight Test Center at Edwards AFB, California, on 2 February 1974.
The F-16 originated in an order placed in 1972 for a lightweight cost-effective air-to-air fighter. Current models are also all-weather capable and effective for ground attack as well. The U.S. Air Force took first delivery in 1978. The F-16 is 49 feet (15 metres) long and has a wingspan of 31 feet (9.45 metres)

he Kratos XQ-5A Valkyrie loyal wingman is $2 million a copy. A F-16 is $63 million a copy. So of course the Air Force wants a $63 million dollar solution for a $2 million problem.
Wonder how many people would board an autonomous commercial airline?
Ummm we already do. The guys upfront are babysitting the autopilot and handling the ground taxi.
There was a good article about this a while back in Readers Digest. I believe it was titled, “In praise of older experienced pilots “. Something similar to that.
It gave true life examples of the pilots taking over when things went wrong.

OPM so who cares right?
So, we could build 1000 of them in lieu of one charity donation to Ukraine.

And for every one of these events, there are 10 pilot errors resulting in a Lawn Dart event. Of course AI doesn't have a bad day and decide to fly into a mountain or the ocean.

No doubt but even though AI is the future of many things it can hardly be thought of as faultless,,,yet.
Its ability to foresee mechanical type errors and compensate for those would be a major step forward.

Jet fighters fly fast so can only be over target area short time ..WORSE yet .is when they have AI control without humans helocopter gun ships and tanks and other armoured vehicles .They can control or shoot humans at will for a long period of time .And like has been said They wont have too worry about chopper and tank crews refusing to shoot American citizens. And they can hold and control ground
With A.I. "pilots", they'll never have to worry about this situation.
If you can eliminate the human, the F16 becomes a very inefficient platform. Current fighters are built around that 5'10" tall 20" oval that is very fragile and needs life support systems.
Maybe the cockpit could be reconfigured into fuel space, or other usable space. The bare platform would lose hundreds, maybe thousands of pounds. Probably thousands, without ejection seats, oxygen systems, the current controls, armor...a person in flight gear...heck there would be no need for a canopy, displays

This is the exact reason it is being done.

Trump Won!, Sandmann Won!, Rittenhouse Won!, Suck it Liberal Fuuktards.
This also negates the question "Would USAF pilots be willing to attack US citizens?"
My thoughts exactly. Scary times are coming soon to a neighborhood near you.....
Biden's most truthful quote ever came during his first press conference, 03/25/21. Drum roll please...... "I don't know, to be clear." and THAT is one promise he's kept!!!
