Had another minor flood last night. Got down to my skivvies and removed part of my fence that had 20 ton of cornstalks hanging up. When it broke loose, I had to hold the top wire for a bit. Very wet here. Been in a drought since 2020. Going to be another week before I get in the fields. I was done planting this time last year.

I'm looking for dinosaur eggs. My neighbour found one in a load of 3-under sewer rock like this. It is the size and shape of chicken egg, slightly flattened on one side indicating a leathery shell, with a chip out of it showing interior membrane. About as cool as anything I've seen!

However, my wife thinks I'm building raised-bed gardening, because of our cold soil and air temps, and short growing season. Lots of light tho. And we are getting a bit long in tooth for all that bend-over weeding.

I've been making soil with ground up local peat, silty "top-soil", sand, and a bit of clay, a wheel-barrow load at a time. If Bender's horse-pucky compost pile wasn't mudded in, some of that would be in there as well - but later! Couple weeks to planting time yet, tho some volunteer lettuce is up. Starts are in the kitchen and under garage loft grow-light. And no, I don't think this is cost/time effective, but sure is a nice break from store-bought cardboard produce!

Life is tough on the Last Frontier!

I told her I was getting almost as good at making soil as God.

She said, "You should be - you've been at it almost as long."

No respect- just none at all!

The south, east, and west sides of the block will be painted black for solar heat absorption.

I'll finish the project next spring. I'm running out of steam and enthusiasm right now, and there is fishing to do.

It's a 30 year project, almost done! smile

Jim, have you checked with NRCS about high tunnels/ caterpillar tunnels? They used to have a grant program for them to assist rural areas with producing fresh produce. As always, there's strings attached or something I heard. I keep threatening to do one, seems one must come up with the up front purchase cost and then you get reimbursed.
She's planting directly in the soil. There's some tarps and weed barrier in there temporarily.
I was hoping that's what I was seeing, but thought it might be some sort of black colored concrete floor. Some greenhouse folks only like to do container plantings.

I wish her (and you) a good harvest!

Just got my front gate controller replaced yesterday, another lightning strike, took two months to get a replacement circuit board this time, as it had to be ordered. I think that is #3 or #4 we have replaced in 3 years. that is pretty delicate stuff for a 24 ft entry gate. Does not bode well.

Also got another wet delay by the timer cutters, too wet to put their equipment on the ground.

Knew a man that lived down in Yucaipa. He would say it was so dry there the rain was only wet on one side.

I'm having a springtime firewood festival. I have gotten 2 truckloads in the past week. I got this load yesterday, it is locust, for all night burns and white pine for kindling.

Now, mrs slumlord is building a 14x10 bedroom addition, i can get some pics later. Maybe make a thread on it. Too many recent surgeries for me help with construction work. She has it under control. Supposed to start cypress plank ceiling this week. All her thing plus her day job.

A rarity.

This product is called NUcore, not sure where she got it, but it's on par with LifeProof.

We used LifeProof in Tenn, the one that has 3 different width planks.
Can't find it with the random widths now.
I just unloaded 1,000 sq ft of 8" COREtec at the house in Virginia.
Put it down either this weekend or next.
