well i live in virginia and sometimes our deer can be pretty tough.i have deer hunted for 20 plus years and while reading literature and many posts i have decided i have not been using enough gun. the deer that i normally kill at 100 to 200 yards will probably begin to get smarter making longer range shoots a reality.i guess i should get to the question.doese barnse make an x in 50 cal?do yall think that a 50bmg could handle a deer?or should i move up.most shots will probably be at a mile or more. since i dont think i will try to hunt any more.many of the tactics i have used in the past would never work on these modern deer anyway.should i buy a range finder and what kind of scope should i get.almost forgot my blaze orange is spooking a lot of deer and i have ordered a ghillie suit. thanks moon

You need a 50 Ultra, it is faster, flatter, and powerfuler.

Moon, undoubtedly modern deer are much tougher and smarter and more armor plated than the deer we are used to. Since you are in Va. why don't you check around some of the Civil War battlefields and see if you can locate a 12 pounder Parrot rifle. You can tow it with your all wheel drive atv while wearing your ghillie suit made of scent lock poly and your blaze orange boots.

thanks boggy, thats a great idea.the only thing is i dont know if they make proper super pemiums for the 12 pounder or not.if i could round up a parrot what kind of mounting system for the scope do you think i should go with?do you think that the regular lead ball would achieve full penetration?i am also wondering if i could otfit it with synthetic wheels.

Halfmoon : I'd go with the synthetic wheels to reduce weight and felt recoil . You know that a few oz. in weight reduction makes a big differance at reduceing fatigue at the end of day when carrying 10 tons of cannon .

Moon, most definately synthetic wheels for the reason Star menitoned. As to sighting there are some fantastic deals coming out of the old USSR on artillery range finders. I don't believe there would be much problem adapting one to your Parrot. A Weaver base could be attached and the scope spot welded on if you really want to be professional. I'd use 8x32 base screws though as 6x48 might not be robust enough.
The added attraction with the Parrot is that you are also good to go for the muzzleloader season too.

The 50 Ultra would be perfect especially if you can find some 453 grain Sierra Blitz or 470 Hornady V-Max "pills" for it. Maybe we finally see a gun that can put these tough beasts down with some authority - at least if the red mist is considered 'down'.

I think the Parrot would be a good choice also - it would give Halfmoon someone to talk to.

"Halfmoon want a cracker?"

While this is not th best for stalk hunting methods, nor tree stands... it works wonders for ground blinds.

the parrot project as well as the 50ultra will probably prove themselves to be able to take out a deer with the right projectile.yes i believe that the synthetic wheels are the way to go with the parrot, and maybe i can get them custom swirled.the only thing the parrot is a single shot and one of these modern whitetails could possibly charge.that is where a repeater would have a slight advantage over the tactical parrot. remmember the old easy deer that could be killed with a standard caliber,to bad they have evolved into this beast that one day may have to have air strykes called in to bring them down.if only dad could have hunted these high tech deer his 30/30 and 44mag carbines would have just bounced off them.

Yeah, moon, the old easy deer are gone. They are changing so fast. What magnesiums some of the sports are packing into the bushes as shooting irons today won't be enough pretty soon. You can see definate changes in the deer's teeth and hooves down here. Why in just a few more seasons I believe they will have developed fangs and claws.

Why are guys half-steppin'?? Cut the crap and just throw a Tromix .458 SOCOM upper on your AR lower, and Wallah!! Enough gun to bust even the toughest White-tails SAAPI plates...

yep that 458socom should work and provide a quik follow up shot.the fangs and hoofs changing is showing up a lot deer are starting to become carnivorous.all of this comes from wounding deer with dinky guns like 243,270,308,30/06 and such.i guess ill keep my smaller guns for vermin and tree rats until they evolve into such high tech creatures as deer.my 338 should make a dandy rabbit and squirrel gun loaded with partitions.

Funny, but everyone I know who goes West for a hunting trip puts their 'old reliable' Eastern rifle in the closet, then runs frantically to buy a new .300 "more suitable for the task". Ah, if they would only listen instaed of preach................ Bo'b

I think the parrot gun is over-rated. Single shot weapons are not suitable for hunting deer. The minimum that an ethical hunter should carry afield is the 50 BMG, in its original configuation, the Browning Machine Gun.

I have seen too many deer escape that have not been sufficiently wounded. Firepower is the key, shot placement is for "Girly-Men."

Halfmoon : You know you can't use the Mini gun in it's standard configuration for deep woods hunting . You need the sawed off and ported guide gun version or better yet; the 30mm from an A-10 tank buster .

Aw hell. Next it'll be a Piper or Cessna with one of them 'smart' video guided bombs you'll be thinking of using. You can just sit back, bust 'em and fry 'em at the same time. I've been seeing the same type of physical changes in Red deer here in NZ and I'm looking side ways at my .25-06 It might be the beginning of a world wide thing
