i like rl-19 and 180 sierras.
Hunting is not a matter of life or death. It is much more important than that.

I've had very good results with WLRM primers, RL-19, and Hornady 165 gr Interbonds.

I used CCI primers, 63 gr of H4350, and 165 Sierra Game King with good luck this year.

Haven't tried the H 4350 but the IMR 4350 is the best I've tried along with sierra 150's spitzers and 165's HPBT. Look at 4831 if your considering the heavier bullets such as the 180's

Good Thread here. Lotsa good suggestions concerning powder and bullets. Had my 300 WSM, a Savage Model 10, almost 4 years now and here's the only snag I ever ran into concerning reloads: Had good, accurate loads worked up and was real happy, when testing loads I single loaded them into the gun. Forgot to check if they fit the magazine. One day I tried gettin one down into the mag. and found it too long. Eventually started seating bullets about 80 thou. off the lands so they'd fit the magazine and my accuracy was just as good or better. As long as it shot good I was happy, but I never understood why I had to seat bullets that deep into the case. Looked at some Winchester 150 gr. factory ammo and the bullets were seated quite deep also. Then one day I read an article here at the campfire in the reloading section, of "Smokelore" magazine, entitled "Factors In Accuracy, Part II: Handloads" by John Barsness. He explains how the WSM's are not throated in the usual manner. Check it out. It could save you a lot of head scratching concerning seating depth and/or magazine length restrictions concerning WSM's.

300 WSM = H4350 65 grains (MAX LOAD) 168TSX's Fed 215 primers and Winchester brass. Shoots sub MOA and am getting between 3080 and 3100 fps. Was getting about 3150 fps with 65.5 grains of H4350 but backed off to 65 cuz of a slightly snug bolt lift post firing.

The Savage rifles magazine box length in 2.8 inches which in some cases made reaching the lands with bullets difficult because of the limited magazine box length. The Winchester magazine box length is 3.1 inches which offers more bullet seating latitude. If you loads shoot accurately,it is a "Mute" point. Doc

Just to stir a pot, I watched a buddy paste 2 exotic goats with a 300 WSM and 180 Sierras. Neither bullet exited from 200 yards, and hit the soft stuff. Obviously we are not too hot on them anymore.
I think I am using a healthy dose of RL-22, and WLR's. Won't quote the charge from work, w/o data in from of me. My pard is hot on Ramshot Hunter right now. Cheap and clean and ball.
I was never able to get close to book specs with H4350, though others claim it is the perfect burn rate.
Please God, give me some good tags this year....

I have not been able to get to book specs with H-4350 in my 300 SAUM either, the max loads in the nosler #5 will give me shiny ejecter marks so I back right off. RL 19 will give the velocities that the loads of H-4350 should give and RL 19 shows no apparent pressure signs at all. Maybe we both have a faster burning lot of H-4350.

Doc Encore... Good point. Too bad I didn't know about Savage mag length sooner. I was workin out of the 5th edition Nosler manual back then; they give the S.A.A.M.I. maximum overall cartridge length as 2.860". Dug out my notes from back then on the Winchester 150 gr. Ballistic Silvertip factory stuff. The O.A.L. on it was just over 2.81", but they worked. They also chrono'd 3182 fps. My Savage has a blind magazine, (no floorplate), so it will have to wait till next time it's out of the stock for an accurate measurement of mag length. This thread started out concerning a Savage in 300 WSM so I figured the guy might run into the same problem. Wish that Savage used a 3.1" magazine box. According to Mr. Barsness, in his treatise on reloading: "The throat of the .300 Winchester Short Magnum (and the other WSM's) is interesting, mostly because it doesn't exist. The rifling starts right in front of the chamber's neck, which not only keeps overall length of cartridges short enough to fit in a 3.05" magazine, but eliminates any worry about inaccuracy resulting from "bullet jump". This non-existent throat is one reason factory-model WSM's of any caliber tend to shoot very well".... Well said, Mr. J.B.. That's one thing I like about reloading for a lot of different cartridges. You're always learnin' something new, and that's what makes life interesting.
