Good pics, thanks 7stw.
I thought one of those pulp mills was going to pump hot water into the Fraser to break the jam up?

I went down Pulpmill Rd..Try by all means possible to STAY OFF Queensway at all times. For reasons of it being the scumbag sector plus the hood with the drive-by's next door.

I hope I'm wrong, but to me (knowing the volume of the river involved) pouring hot outflow from a single mill on to it - to try and melt that volume of ice, seems, to me, to be similar to a fisherman trying to make an icefishing hole - by peeing on the lake ice.
I think it's time they outfitted some dozer boats or tugs with ice blades up front and protection on the sides - and in the FUTURE - not allow the jam to form in the first place - in otherwords fight jams from day one - with boats.
Hindsight is always 20/20, but this is a disaster that (like the Kelowna fire) could have been quite easily fought - if officials hadn't dithered for weeks - while it grew in size.
It's time Prince George invested in some preventative equipment - heavy duty boats maintained for just such an occasion.

I guess thats the result of building on flood plains , should just move the businesses out of there and let the river run its course.

The object of the warm water pipeline,is to soften up the ice to make it easier for the hoe to break up.It take 86 years to melt that with the pipeline.Thats one massive ice jam.The picture's really don't give it justice.

That hoe looks like a tonka toy working on a ski hill , they need about a dozen of them.

Ha!
That brings to mind the words of my esteemed Geography professor, who, upon completion of the hyrology part of the course - would ask us "If there's ONE thing you've learned from this course it is? "
To which we would all answer aloud - "NEVER build on a flood plain" to his approving smile.

Now it is 30 km long and growing with the cold weather. They removed the hoe and are now thinking about letting mother nature do her thing. I would hate to live anywhere along the upper Fraser, Nechako or Stuart when spring comes. The Nechako resivour only has 3' before alcan lets the water really go. Lets hope for a slow cold spring.
If you shoot it on your own, they will cook it If you don't, they will feed you something they shot. Which is like having another man change your tire on your truck, NOT GOOD
