With the obvious success Lipsey's has had with the .300 H&H Kudu model in the upcoming African series, I'm curious if it's the gun itself or the chambering ppl were looking at. My take is the chambering. It's a fantastic cartridge that's simply been overshadowed by the latest and greatest super short gee-whiz cartrigdes. The sales of the Kudu really shows there is a definate market for these older chamberings. So now I'm wondering...
Would you buy a Ruger #1 chambered in...

.30-30
.30-40 Krag
.303 British
.300 H&H
.38-55

Just a "yes" or "no" and if not, why.

No - While I consider myself to have a strong sense of history, there are some other classic chamberings, outside of those listed, that I would find more appealing.

I'll take one in 300 H&H.

For some reason, I've always thought that single shot fodder should be rimmed.

My 7x57 RSI already out-shines all the calibers shown except the .300 H&H Magnum... and after hunting for over 40 years with a .338 Win. Magnum in a Model 70 I bought new in 1961, I've had ENOUGH "teeth-rattling" recoil to last me for the rest of my life.

And that's why I "retired" the big Winchester in favor of the Model 99 Savage in .300 Savage caliber... and why I bought the RSI in the relatively mild, but VERY effective 7mm Mauser.

Besides, what caliber could be MORE "CLASSIC" than the 7x57 (aka "7mm Mauser" or ".275 Rigby") ?!?

The cartridge is 115 years old and still going strong.

I would take a .300 H&H but would rather have the "flanged" version.

I have one and thibnk that everyone should get a chance to fire one of them. The recoil is gentle compared to a .300 WM -- much less to a .338 WM!!! (I have seen lots and lots of that caliber on sale at gun shows -- "only fired once"!).

The romance of the rimmed cartrirdges leaves me cold. Why would you want to further compicatre the ammo/brass search and further shrink the potential original and resale market for an already semi-exotic new gun? I do not do Ackley any more for the same reason.

How long ago were these "Kudus" made? And where was I - was I passed out in an epileptic fit? I'd definitely buy a No. 1 in 300 H&H.
I do think it'd be neat to see a No.1 in "European dress", perhaps as an English stalker rifle, with a pancake cheekpiece and all those other fixins. I don't think I could take one in .303 British, but I'd probably go for one in 8x57....

Love the 300 H&H. It looks like a cruise missile.

A #1 in 7mm Mauser would be terrific also.

While my RSI is chambered in the standard 7x57 "rimless" cartridge, I think it would be neat... and SEEM "appropriate" if it was chambered for the 7x57R (the "rimmed" version of the standard 7x57).

While I agree with you that having a rifle chambered for most rimmed cartridges tends to complicate one's life, the "romance" of rimmed cartridges chambered in single shot rifles just seem so "right" and goes "hand-in-hand" with the "image" of what most of us think of as a "classic" single shot rifle in the wonderful world of classic rifles.

While I feel the standard 7x57 cartridge, for which my RSI is chambered is "classic", it would be MORE "classic" if it were chambered for the much less available 7x57R... the rimmed version of the same cartridge.

In addition, while I was doing it, I would like to have a double-set trigger on my RSI... but both of these "preferences" will probably never see the "light-of-day" since I'm too frugal to spend the money it would require to pay a top quality gunsmith to make it so.

The Kudus are just now becoming available as I understand it. They are being offered as one of five rifles commissioned by Lipseys, "honoring" Craig Boddington. There is another full topic on this forum addressing the subject.
