The failures were mostly lack of blood trail, due to the coyote, antelope, deer or elk falling over at the shot in such a manner as to drive the exit wound into the dirt, or being able to walk anywhere so as to leave a trail.
Many of the rest of the failures were a failure of the animal to continue breathing.

140 ab handloads with a 7 rem for me. Bullet will penetrate the biggest body deer stem to sturn from any angle. Almost a little 'too much' bullet i think if deer is all your after. My rifle double duties on elk as well, hense I went with the tougher of the 2, not that a bt wouldn't work, just re-assurance in my mind.

If you are really close, either (any) bullet may do weird things at high speeds.

THe boys at Nosler told me a couple of years ago that the 150 7mm BT had been toughened up, due to many people using it in 7mm magnums on animals up to elk. My tests and sectioning have confirmed this. If you are worried about close-range shots, use the 150 BT and there should be no problems.

Perro,

My firt buck I killed with my 30-06 and 125 NBT's.

Hit him twice right behind the shoulder and he still walked (ran) off. WHile he was running, i put a NBT through his front shoulder at about 420 yards. I dumped him on the spot. ( when we got to him he had 4 holes in him).

The bullet that hit his shoulder blew up the shoulder and did not go any farther than that. It stopped. plain and simple! If a NBT blew up at that slow of a speed, you can keep em for big game!

I have read and heard too many horror stories of people hitting shoulder and not blowing past that ( and seen it myself at 400+ yards)

I was in the local game and fish office last year, heard the lady talking about how her husband shot a bull in the shoulder. she said he was shooting "exploding" bullets.. wouldnt ya know it, it was a heavy for caliber NBT out of a 30-06. Proof is in the puddin.. and the puddin is still out there walkin around!

They are great bullets for our coues deer, but tend to do a lot of cape damage, and as you know there is not much room for error on a coues cape!

No thanks, Ill stick with my Accubonds! small whole in, 1/2" whole out!

John,
Do you think that there would be any difference between that 150 NBT or a 140 Accubond out of a 7 WSM? Got some Federal factory 140 AB loads for the 7 WSM that are very accurate, but haven't had the opportunity to use them on an animal yet....

I really like the 150 grain BT, it opens fast, makes a big hole and exits. So far all deer have dropped at the shot. Same for the 95 gr. 6MM BT.

Darned if I know! My educated guess is that there wouldn't be a vast difference, but that's all it would be.

I used the 150 Ballistic Tip out of a 7mm-08 a few years ago on a fork-horn blacktail at about 60 yards. Terminal results were quite explosive. I shot him in the neck and a portion of deer neck about the size of an orange was just plain gone.

I'm sure it's a quick killer poked into the lungs; how could it NOT be!! From my sample of one, I'm also pretty sure you could mangle a shoulder pretty good with one.

I really like the Accubond; that's what I'd use. Shot one right into the shoulder bone of a big blacktail buck and hardly lost any meat at all. The bullet went 22+ inches and exited the far flank.

I've shot a fair number of critters with the 150gr BT and double as many with the 140gr Nosler AB from my 280AI and 7-08AI from darned near point blank out close to 400 yds.

Critters included coyotes, wolf, mule deer, whitetail, blackies, moose, Stone's Sheep.

I have not noticed a huge difference in killing ability (neither have let me down) but the 140gr AB seems to consistantly penetrate a little better (and exit more often).

For deer sized critters it may be hard to find a better bullet...but these days I simply pack the 140gr TSX, as it covers all of the bases nicely (hell, I have even been shooting coyotes these past few winters with the 140gr TSX from my 280AI).

No 7 Mag but son used the 140 AB out of a 7x57 Ruger this year in front of 50 gr. H-4350. One of the deer he shot weighed either 100 or 105 lbs. (I forget) and was facing/qtring at the shot about 30 to 40 yds. He hit the point of the shoulder and absolutely demolished it. We found a piece of jacket mixed with the bone fragments. The bullet then quartered thru the chest and paunch to end up in the opposite ham. I measured penetration while the deer was hanging with a steel yardstick at about 32". Bullet looked like a Nosler advertisement except for the missing piece of jacket we found in the shoulder. Also shot a larger doe and a 135 lb buck with the same load, both thru chest and/or shoulder hitting only ribs and meat. None went more than 15 FEET. FWIW.

My wife and I have used 140 gr Accubonds the past 4 seasons in 7-08 and 7wsm. Couldn't ask for more in a bullet - we've killed 8 deer and 5 coyotes with all one shot kills and only 1 bullet recovered.

I am tempted to try the 140 7mm AB reading these reports

I don't always venture out into the sub-freezing darkness, but when I do, it is deer hunting season, and I carry a Remington. Stay hungry my friends.
