My "trophy" from last Sat. in New Mexico. I know it won't make book but it was my first antelope and I'm just tickled pink with it. 270 WSM 140 gr. nosler partion (factory) at a lasered 304 yds.

My wife also got her first one, understandably proud also.

Great looking animals. What did the wife use for hers? Did you hire an outfitter? What part of the state did you hunt? Am I asking alot of questions? The reason being is that I am interested in driving down there in the next year or two and getting me one.

Wife used her 260 Rem. with 125 nosler partitions, 200 lasered yards, her longest shot yet.Yes, we used an outfitter (PM for details) and hunted around Ft. Sumner in SE 1/4 of state. Did the Carlsbad cavern thing for a couple days before hand and really had a great time in the state.

You should be proud. Better than my first antelope. They are a cool animal, huh?

A teacher I knew in high school always had a bet for students taking school sponsered trips that required driving through the Vaughn area. His bet pertained to the number of antelope spotted on the drive. Whoever guessed closest to the number won.

The teacher would let the students guess a number first, then the he would pick the highest number. The teacher always won the bet.

I once asked him about the bets and his answer was, "I only bet on a sure thing."

One another note, I once made the drive between Logan and Springer around sun up, and quit counting at 250 antelope.

The odds of drawing in the area of Southern NM where I grew up are not so great. I believe something like 2500 people applying for 150 permits.

There are some nice antelope there, but I never had a desire to hunt them because they are pretty tame. I've always thought it would be like hunting domesticated cattle.

I was applying in the Clayton area -- outfitter usually draws 75-100% but only drew 50% this year.

Oh, well.
