On the couple of customs that I have, the knife sits deep in the pouch and a tug on the lanyard will start it out.
#1 I see many knives with lanyards that do not have deep pouches. What are they used for?
#2 I hear about "bushcraft" knives. What is that?
Dunno much about knives.

What's a lanyard used for? Many knife makers can't answer that question, but they know they sell more knives that have a lanyard hole if not a lanyard. Bob Loveless was once asked why his knives had lanyard holes and he said that he used the holes to hang the blades on the wall of his shop while he was working on them. As to Bushcraft, it's primarily the pursuit of wilderness or survival skills using simple and durable equipment. Bushcraft knives come in many varieties, but are often the antithesis of the kinds of knives you've been buying. Bushcraft knives are usually simply made, inexpensive, rugged, and easily sharpened in the field. An example would be the Nessmuk style of knife or one of the many Green River styles. Scandanavian knives are also popular for Bushcraft.

I use a lanyard on my knives (those that are so equipped), esp if I am using the knife around water or in any other area that IF it were dropped it would be lost or damaged. The lanyard I use is made of para-cord with a loop just big enough for my hand to fit through and the knife can hang from my wrist without slipping off easily.

The lanyard is used to hang the knife on a tree limb while using it in the field so it doesn't get lost in the snow, or damaged.

On dry land you are right, not usually an issue, but, I once dropped my knife while cutting the quarter off a moose hanging in the garage, blade hit the cement floor tip first, "snap". Ya know, Murphys Law, the dropped object will land wrong! That sucked as it was a nice knife.
