My 13 yr old son went on an elk hunt with his grandpa and made 3 good shots on a nice 6 X 6. The 1st shot was a double lunger at 180yds. The 2nd shot was the same distance at the now moving elk which busted the front shoulder. The bull went about 5 yds and lay down. When they got to about 35-40 yds, the bull picked his head up and my son finished him off with a neck shot. He was shooting 99C .308 w/125 gr Rem Corelokt. I thought he was a little under gunned but I guess shot placement is the key.

That's terrific. Congratulate him for me.

It's good to see kids out hunting instead of stuck on some computer game.

Thanks for sharing the pics. Great to see a young man out hunting.

If it all was'nt impressive enough, did ya notice the open sites! At 180 yards not many people could put 3 shots on the mark with all the adrenaline pumping. AWSOME!

Chip,
Those aren't smiles. The second pic he said he was a little nervous because every once in a while, a leg would still kick. The 1st pic, my son and FIL drug it out of the brush about 15 yds, downhill on the snow and were wiped out.

I attribute the good shots to all the time we spent on the range the past 6 years with 22's, 20 ga, and now his .308.

The funny thing is my FIL didn't get a shot at a bull.

Most Excellent!!!
125 grain Core-Lokt????? Impossible! Everyone knows that elk must be taken with premimum bullets such as Barnes tsx, or the very least, a Nosler partition. Why, anything else is to invite disaster and wound game. laugh wink
