Gents,

I think I asked this before, but I need help chosing a deer call for the Blacktails around here. I've never used one, and was looking for some recommendations.

Thanks!

I do not think the brand would make any difference, but I would make sure the call came with someone to watch my back. Maybe Sitka Deer or JJHack with one of my Lotts.

A friend here was on Kodiak years ago, calling Black Tails. Result is a 9-1/2 foot Brown Hide on the wall in his den. This one came at a full run, he shot it in the mouth with a 250 Savage. The following week he bought a 375 H&H in Anchorage.

John, I can appreciate your concern. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Unfortunately, I am the back-up! While I'd love to be holding one of your DGR's, I'm stuck with my 'not so well built, but functional' 416 Taylor. At least it's a Winchester. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

We're still trying to get my wife a nice buck. Been out a couple times, but it's hard with work, family, and weather to deal with.

The K'mer deer is the call I have used the most. When they are hot it doesn't make much difference and a blade of grass is as good as anything... I have never had a big bear come to the call, but I am pretty careful about where I call from.

I feel a paradigm shift in brown bear attitude these past 10 years or so. In the old days it was laughable to think of a bear coming in hard to a rifle shot or a deer call. Not so anymore... I really like the idea of gutting the deer and getting out of Dodge ASAP. All that meaning that I really believe you need to be careful when calling...

How do you say "I'm so drunk, can someone give me a ride home?" in blacktail deer language? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

Okay then. Guess I'll just go down to the Sporting Goods shop and see what they carry. If they got a K'Meer call, I'll get one of those.

Thanks for the help gents...

Joel, I mean 'Master Bonzi'.. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Thanks for the concern, although you know the risks yourself. Brownies are always a concern here on Baranof Island, but most hunters don't go crazy worrying about them.

It' the 'gut'em quick' and pack them out right away routine which work the best, as I'm sure you know.

Since your moving to Big Sticks area, I'm sure you'll learn much about getting the meat out first. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
