If you are worried about spyware and viruses you are using a crappy OS!

That's probably true, but I'm not too techy and just like to keep it simple. Funny how often my Compaq had trouble but neither of my PC Laptop computers have even had a hiccup...

If you are in to podcasts, Itunes has many free ones. Check them out.

1akhunter - Do what I did (probably too late). Have kids. I'm with you, without my 16 year-old son and my 12 year-old daughter, I would be lost about this stuff. Until my kids told me otherwise I thought podcast is what you did when you didn't like fresh peas.

but seriously, if you've the time I'd appreciate more of a breakdown on how to do this gig.

time's getting short, if I don't get some songs loaded the boys are gonna have to put up with the old man's singin! (been outlawed in prison as cruel and unusual punishment, but tis amazin what you can get away with on your own kin!)

Ironbender,

If your hardware is fairly new - Linux. If you like to tweak things this is the most configurable OS out there with lots of distributions. I like both Ubuntu and OpenSuse 10.3.

If your thinking about a new system buy a Mac.

I use both at home and I could bore everyone with how much better they are but I won't do that.

I spent 13+ years as a Network Administrator and Consultant so I do know about Windows. I won't use it unless you pay me too.

1akhunter - this should get you started. You'll love the thing once you start using it.

I know you are approaching geezerhood like me. An audiobook on an iPod weighs less than a paperback PLUS you can have 1000s of tunes and podcasts to listen too as well. Dive in dude!

1akhunter, a podcast is in essence a radio broadcast that can be downloaded onto and played on an iPod. iTunes has several that are free. Tom Gresham's Guntalk is one I download regularly. Another is "The Gun Rights Podcast" (I think I have the name right. In addition, I get "60 Minutes", podcasts from Discovery Channel and several others. Anyway, if you go to the iTunes store and select "podcasts", most of the choices there are free. I also have downloaded all of my CDs onto my iPod and therefore have all the music for every mood that I would ever need.

Thom

I have always dreamed of having a "book on MP3 player" for when the sun was set, and I was in that time between finished with supper and ready for bed.

Any good places to download these?

Regarding music, I have had great success with Mp3 sparks.com http://www.mp3sparks.com/

Cheaper than i-tunes, Great selection, "legal" and i can search by genre, artist, song title...etc.

Theres a land where the mountains are nameless
And the rivers all run God knows where;
There are lives that are erring and aimless
And deaths that hang by a hair.
Theres a landoh, it beckons and beckons
And I want to go backand I will
