Gentlemen,
The latest 99 came home last Friday. It is my first time with a takedown model. The serial is 202xxx which should put it around 1918 or 1919. I scrubbed it up and all seems well with the action and bore. It is drilled and tapped which is a helpful for those of us with weak eyes. My immediate questions have to do with model and accuracy. It has a schnobel forearm and 22" barrel. The checkering on the forearm wraps all the way under. I'll post a pic later but I am curious if that is enough info to assign a model?? Secondly I am interested in other people's experience with accuracy in the takedown models. The barrel seems to lock up tight and the rifling is pristine. I shot two batches of factory 100 grain Silvertips on Saturday and the newer stuff was not well received. I have some older stock in the white and orange box that finally shot one group around 2+'' My other 250's in the solid barrel models have been closer to an inch. I am stocked with a variety of 85-100 grain bullets that I will try next in various combos. Does anybody have a pet load that has made one of these takedown 250's happy? Anyways I'll report back with pics and more info later. Thanks in advance for the help. RP

rikker99, the rifle you have is a late 1899 250-3000, the rifling twist was designed for the 87 grain factory ammo.Don

Nice rifle! My 250's like the shorter bullets (most of the 87gr's work great), and H4895 seems to get good velocity and groups.

I've had the same luck with factory 100's about 6" groups. I found that 87gr Speer Hotcores work great and 75gr Siera's just the ticket for coyotes. I use 3031 for all my 250-3000 loads.

Wish they would have used the same barrel they used on the 25-35, my 1899B just loves Hornady 117RN again over 3031.

After the first shot the rest are just noise.

Rikker99,

Nice looking rifle you have there. My 50's vintage 99R in 250 savage makes consistent 1.5" groups at 100 yds with winchester 100 gr silver tip factory ammo, which sounds like what you achieve with your solid frame 99's in 250 savage. My 99R has the slower 1-14 twist.

If the bore looks good on your takedown, perhaps the barrel threads are a little loose. If you can shoot from a bench, try supporting the rifle on the receiver, not the forearm, and see what results you get.

Good luck,

Mike

Does it come in Red and Black plaid? Is it wool?

Thanks for the input. I have some of the 87 grain Speers so its off to the loading bench. Does anybody know the actual model designation of this gun? RP

Gonna disagree, Jed.. SN is too low. It's an 1899 250-3000. Danged close to the G's though.
