Nice catch and a beautiful little helper who likely is the biggest "reward"..........she's either got the prettiest smile I've ever seen or she's frozen....can't tell.

The ice is thick enough to drive huge trucks with oil drilling rigs aboard and the water is surprisingly shallow.

Used to work on the exploratory rigs and drove the ice roads regularly. Many went well beyond Alaska boundaries and we used to brag about driving South to Alaska.

Thanks for all the comments guys. We pull the pots up by hand, and we check them every couple days. The water is only about 70 deep and the ice in the picts is about 3 thick which is plenty safe. It takes only a couple of inches to support a person, and IIRC just under a foot to support a car/small truck. The thing I worry about more than breaking through is the ice breaking off shore and blowing out to sea. It happens every year about this time, so Im pretty cautious of that.

If that's Nome, perhaps. Many folks prefer coolers to keep the crabs from freezing so the legs don't break off and to keep the crabs in better eating condition. Assuming you don't plan to eat them frozen, they cook up nicer if they haven't been frozen first. Looks like Seward Peninsula to me though.
