They were made in 1970 and only in the 308 caliber. I don't understand why Savage would make a anniversary edition of the 1895 and not make it in one of there own calibers but thats a whole other topic.

Also there were only 10,000 made, just out of curiousity is your pair consecutively serial numbered?

No unfortunatelythey are not, both serial No's are..... 0***AS.

I have just brought these and no nothing about them, I have several other O/U savage rifles and I had never seen these before, that s why I got them.

Next Q is are they Ok to use or put them away?

Thanks

Thats entirely up to you, I don't have a clue about these commemerative 95's or there collectability. Perhaps Savparts or Rick might have an idea, sorry.

Also I found this over at the auctions but you know how they overprice everything there!

They are not really considered to be desireabe collectibles at this time--but who knows in the future. If the inlay is intact and the gold color not worn off the lever, I'd put them away. If they have seen some use, they are great shooters, especially if you do not mind something a little heavier than the F

The truth of the matter is, there are less then 10.000 complete guns made. They stopped the production way short of the goal of 10,000. Exact number I don't know. They destroyed a lot of the receiver and had a few bbls left over. In 1983 I knew of 10 bbls and we used them on some 99's for customers with serial numbers over one million. The firearm as of today is bringing in about $675.00 in excellect condistion unfired with the box, no box $550.00

Sorry to be a pest, but what does "bbls" stand for?

The guns are here in Australia and nobody seems to know anything much about them. How they got here? Either brought in privately or by Savage? Nobody seems to know.

They were picked up from a deceased estate and the family don't know anything about them.

Thats why I'm asking the questions, thanks for any information about them.

I've looked on the Savage site but nothing there, am I right to assume that they a mod 99 but just "done up special"?

Thanks

Oinksec,

We are glad to help. Had you put more details in you personal information file we would have know you might not have access to the some history we enjoy here in the US.

Your rifles are 75th anniversary commeratives that were produced by Savage in 1970. The advertised that they were going to produce only a maximum or 10,000 units but as Savparts advised they produced less than that (Steve worked for Savage several years but not when the rifle was produced). It is a modern rifle that was SUPPOST to look some what like the original 1895 (pre 1899/99). It has a tappered octagon barrel, crescent butt plate, blade front sight and part of the early patent date on the barrel. Other than that the features are just to make a saleable product. Some people have used them as hunting rifles but I don't think they are drill and tapped for a scope and the crescent butt is had on the shoulder. Most are still new in the box and will bring the most money as a collectors item.

Bbls = barrels. As Steve said, a few of the barrels were later used on standard rifles. Steve has just acquired a barrel and receiver from the factory and has them for sale on the action sites. These are probably the last of the unused parts from the 1970 production of rifles.

I don't think there are factory records from 1970 available that would show where the rifles were shipped.

You didn't say if your rifles have been used or are still in the box. It would be nice to know the second digit in the serial numbers so we can see how late of production they are. The prices Steve gave you are good for the US and may have no connection with what you could get in Australia. How are prices for lever actions in Australia? Am I correct that it is one of the few styles that the government did not destroy?

Does that help? You might look for a 1970 Savage catalog. It would show pictures and the details. They are available on eBay from time to time.

Hiya Guys

I can add a bit to oinksecs info as I am the one he got them off .

They have both been fired, not much though, I got them from a friend who's uncle died and left them to her. They were unregistered so I took care of that.

They were not really my cup of tea, but knowing that oink is a collector I passed em onto him.

Here are some pics of them 1895

To answer the question of legality, yes, all lever actions are still legal here, regardless of magazine capacity, makes heaps of sense ay , when they banned pump action shotguns ! .

They are in the process of "stealing" our handguns at the moment, choosing the very bright move of banning any revolver with a barrel shorter than 100mm (4inches) and pistols with a barrel shorter than 120mm (4 3/4 inches).

So now everyone is buying newer, more modern, longer, more accurate handguns , govts, you just gotta love em ay

Thanks for the information, that makes a bit more of the story fall into place.

Hi Mick Was wondering if you'd sign up after the phone call. Mick & myself are mates & hunting mates!

The serial No's are about 0150AS & 0450AS for each rifle.

Does that help or mean anything.

Again thanks for your help. We are both interested to find out as much information as possible about them.

I also have several o/u combination 240 models, I love em!

Again not much information about them is available over here.

Thanks

Thanks RAM, (ROBI the guy i was suppose to buy the 1895 from) however the guy is a FLAKE doesn't answer e-mail or return phone calls, so it's still in limbo, if he wants to keep it, then he should not have put up for acution, I think I will just build one and save the $600.00 for something else. If you see any of his stuff for sale, becareful he is a FLAKE

( building a 110 with accutrigger in .358 now)

Steve,

Are you refering to the 1895 Anniv. that you bought from "Robi" on the AA? If so, you need to go back and edit your posting as I thought at first that you were refering to our new Azzie friends.

Oinksec,

Both rifles have low numbers. I wonder if they were shipped to an Australian dealer? The sling swivels were added so if you are going to use one I would make it that one.
